The latter had spoken once or twice of the necessity of finding something for the men below to do, but Danbury had waved aside the suggestion with a good-natured "Let 'em loaf." But finally their grumblings and complainings grew so loud that Stubbs was forced to take some notice of it, and so, upon his own responsibility, had them up on deck where he put them through a form of drill.
The boycott against the Danbury, manufacturers began in July, 1902, and was widened to include the wholesalers who handled the goods of the Danbury concern, the dealers who bought from the wholesalers, and customers who bought from these dealers. Notices to this effect were printed in the official organs of the American Federation of Labor and the United Hatters of North America.
"I am with Danbury," answered Wilson. "The girl and the man were in the dungeons below." "Ah! These are the two captured by the the late government?" "Yes. I would like shelter for the girl. She is very weak." "Dios! you shall have refuge at once." He turned to one of his lieutenants and in Spanish gave his command. "In the name of the Queen seize the house opposite." He turned back to Wilson.
"Now," he said, "come on and I'll make you glad you're living." "Just a moment, Cap'n my mate Wilson." Danbury turned sharply. In the light which now flooded up from below, he saw Wilson's features quite clearly, but for a moment he could not believe his eyes. "What the devil " he began, then broke in abruptly, "Are you the same one the fellow in the Oriental robe and bandaged head?"
"I am once more returned to dear Danbury, on my way to Boston. I arrived here about an hour since, and never had a more fatiguing, disagreeable journey in my life than from Philadelphia here.
He was like a hen on a bank, shaking the butt of his whip, but not daring to cut in for fear of hitting me. "Stop it, Kid," he says, "stop it. Do you want to be all torn up?" says he. "Think of the Boston show next week," says he, "Think of Chicago. Think of Danbury. Don't you never want to be a champion?" How was I to think of all them places when I had three dogs to cut up at the same time.
No: life has too many vicissitudes in that Connecticut borough. It presents too kaleidoscopic an appearance to suit my style. Family catastrophes succeed each other at a brisker rate than I am used to. I shouldn't relish being a Danbury man on North street or South street: indeed, if you urge the thing, not even on East, West or any other street.
The office of Deputy Director-General of Hospitals was established by ordinance, April 7th, 1777; and four days later, Dr. Foster was chosen by Congress to this office, having charge of the Eastern Department. His subsequent residence was mainly at Danbury, Connecticut. Of Tryon's expedition against Danbury we have the following account, differing in some respects from the common version:
The two rolled upon the deck until the mate stooped and picked up Splinter bodily and, raising him above his head, fairly hurled him like a bag of grain down the ladder after the last of the mutineers. Danbury, in spite of his loss of blood, held himself together wonderfully.
In a period of strong political excitement, he wrote several communications for the Danbury weekly paper, setting forth what he conceived to be the dangers of a sectarian interference which was then apparent in political affairs.
