If an author's style is such that you cannot *respect* it, then you may be sure that, despite any present pleasure which you may obtain from that author, there is something wrong with his matter, and that the pleasure will soon cloy. You must examine your sentiments towards an author.

There is nothing in life, to an ardent young soul, at the beginning of his career especially if he feels that he has a burden laid upon him to deliver to his fellows half so sweet as the early recognition by some man of wisdom and weight and influence, that he too is a messenger from God. In later years praise and acknowledgment cloy.

"And you probably couldn't afford me," said Miss Mullett, "and I guess I'm a good deal like marmalade myself half sweet and half bitter." Miss Mullett laughed at the conceit. "Anyway, dear, you don't cloy," said Eve. "But you're not like marmalade the least bit; you're you're like a nice currant jelly, just tart enough to be pleasant. How's that?"

But mere candy began to cloy Solly Gumble had opened the second box of chocolate mice and the host even abandoned his reënforced lemon, which was promptly communized by the group. He tried to think of something to eat that wouldn't be candy, whereupon mounted in his mind the pyramid of watermelons a block down the street before the Bon Ton Grocery.

The substantial happiness, which enlarges and civilizes the mind, may be compared to the pleasure experienced in roving through nature at large, inhaling the sweet gale natural to the clime; while the reveries of a feverish imagination continually sport themselves in gardens full of aromatic shrubs, which cloy while they delight, and weaken the sense of pleasure they gratify.

It may sound brutal, but undisturbed possession soon palls, and man was made for something more virile than perpetual billing and cooing. The long honeymoon makes a very heavy demand upon the emotions. It is fatal to try and keep up a lost illusion. The moment a man or woman sees that the sweetness is beginning to cloy, and the inaction to bore, it is time to return to everyday life.

Still, I do not object to consider whether it might not be best to serve up the rich repast in two courses; and on the whole I incline to that partition. 120 pages might cloy even epicures, and would be sure to surfeit the vulgar; and the biography and philosophy are so entirely distinct, and of not very unequal length, that the division would not look like a fracture.

No language can express it, no letters will give the sound. Then what in natur is equal to the flavour of it? What an aroma it has! How spiritual it is! It ain't gross, for you can't feed on it; it don't cloy, for the palate ain't required to test its taste. It is neither visible, nor tangible, nor portable, nor transferable. It is not a substance, nor a liquid, nor a vapour.

Lov'd by the Good, esteemed by the Wise, To gracious Heav'n, a pleasing sacrifice. Hail Music, Foretaste of celestial Joy! That always satiasts, yet canst never cloy: Each pure, refin'd, extatic Pleasure's thine, Thou rapt'rous Science! Harmony divine!

But you have often noticed the signification of a 'but," she added, smiling, tapping her cheek lightly with the ivory knife "but the hour arrives when the bandbox becomes a prison, when the simple hours cloy. Then the ordinary incident is merely gauche, and expiation a bore. "I see by your face that you understand quite what I mean.... Well, these things occasionally happen.
