The long train of twenty-five observation-cars stood quietly by the river-side, its occupants closely watching the boat-houses across the river."

Although nearly every man of this 6000 risked his life again and again during the year, not a single life was lost. Nearly all these boats have been supplied with transporting carriages and boat-houses by the Institution. The cost in detail is as follows: The income of the Institution in 1863 amounted to 21,100 pounds. Fifteen new lifeboats were sent to various parts of the coast in that year.

According to the legend, the valley was once an inland sea; a passage opened through the rocks environing it, and drained the waters away, leaving nothing more of its former character than the lake, the Djeloum and minor water-courses. The banks of the river are now lined with boat-houses, long and narrow, which the proprietors, with their families, inhabit the whole year.

Everywhere they stood at pierheads, almost torn from their holdfasts by the furious gale, or they cowered under the lee of boats and boat-houses on the beach, trying to gaze seaward through the blinding storm, but nothing whatever could they see of the disasters on these outlying sands. There are, however, several sentinels which mount guard night and day close to the Goodwin and other Sands.

A loud crackling and smoke rising through the cocoanut trees told the story. The boat-houses and the barracks were on fire. The big plantation bell was ringing wildly as the German Resident ran down the beach, and he could see whaleboats hastily putting off from the schooner. Barracks and boat-houses, grass-thatched and like tinder, were wrapped in flames.

Pretty frame summer houses, groves of dark green cypress, gardens, boat-houses, and mosques added interest to the views. "The sail up the Bosporus reminds me of one taken on the Hudson River, but the scenery on the banks is Oriental instead of modern," remarked one of the tourists. "The old castles and ruined walls, and the legends connected with them, suggest the Rhine," commented another.

The bondi's daughter was then better and could go out with her mother. So the day passed. At last Grettir noticed a ship rowing up to the island, not large, covered with shields amidships and painted above the water-line. They were rowing briskly and making for Thorfinn's boat-houses. They ran the boat on to the beach and all sprang ashore.

Her pretty foot was encased in patent leather. "The old fool!" murmured Abby. "Why, oh, why could it not have been mine? I could make myself young without being ridiculous." She let her duties go and sauntered down to the lake. Many painted boats were anchored close to ornamental boat-houses. They seemed strangely out of place beneath the sad old willows.

"Jack, my boy," he resumed, "I really believe your idea is a good one, an inspiration, a mark of genius; I verily believe we are on the eve of a great discovery " "Oh, you dry up!" snorted Jack. "I don't really think we'll find one. But it won't hurt to ask." Upon closer inspection all of the boat-houses appeared to be deserted, except the one farthest away.

"There are several little houses down there," said Jack, indicating a group of boat-houses along the banks of the river, about fifty yards away; "perhaps one of them would have a jack." "To jack up the boats with?" asked Harold, sardonically. "It won't hurt to try, anyway," retorted the other boy. "Come on, Ruth! We'll go ask."
