We are all perfectly contented and happy if you would let us alone." "One cannot but deplore the change," said Lady Lambourne. "Personally, I am delighted with everything as it is," cooed Babykins.
When he could sufficiently control his feeling of elation, he looked down at the small person with an air of condescension and again lent himself to the garbled sort of language with which defenceless infants are inevitably persecuted. "Tink of dat horrid old woman wanting to steal our own little oppsie, woppsie, toppsie babykins," he said. Then he turned to Zoie with an air of great decision.
"Look at the luggage!" exclaimed Babykins, and we all went to the window. There was, indeed, a wonderful collection both flys laden with enormous, iron-bound trunks as big as hen-houses. A pair of smart French maids seemed buried beneath them. The entire party of us burned with curiosity to see the owners, but long before they appeared we were conscious of their presence.
"Babykins, you silly darling, as if what we eat makes any difference!" said Lady Grenellen, puffing her cigarette-smoke into cloudy rings in the neatest way. "Of course it does, Cordelia! Food makes all the difference, you know. I have kept those white pigs for four years and I know all about it." Babykins has the most pathetic blue eyes, and her childish voice is arresting.
The ordinary women, like Babykins and Cordelia Grenellen, don't understand his subtle wit. They are generally in love with him, though. Cordelia was madly éprise last autumn; but he is as indifferent as possible, and does not trouble himself about any of them.
"Babykins" cooed his unqualified approval of this plan; but his mother looked troubled. "That's all right, Alice. You may play with him," she frowned doubtfully; "but you mustn't do it long, you know not over five minutes." "Five minutes! Well, I like that, when I've come all the way from Boston purposely to see him," pouted Alice. "What's the matter now? Time for his nap?"
Two of the most highly pitched American voices I have ever heard were saying civil things to our host and Lady Grenellen. More highly pitched than Hephzibah's, and that is the highest, I thought, there could be in the world. "She is awfully good-looking," whispered Babykins, who caught sight of them first as they came through the hall.
He smoothed her arms in a make-believe and yet tender way, and patted her shoulders. Seeing her frown, he inquired, "What's troubling Babykins?" "Oh, nothing more than usual," replied Aileen, irritably. "Let's not talk about that. Have you had your dinner?" "Yes, we had it brought in." He was referring to McKenty, Addison, and himself, and the statement was true.
"It isn't so very much," said Henrietta, "only ten dollars a month more, but it will be a lot for us, and it means a great big lot to me, because it makes me feel that I'm succeeding. What is it, Billikins? Do you want to come up? And you've brought babykins, haven't you? Come on, then, both of you."
"And if you do bon soir, monsieur," and I rose, laughing, and joined my hostess. The party this time was much nicer than the former one I came to. It was composed of clever, interesting people. The conversation was often brilliant and elevating. No one talked like Babykins or Lady Grenellen. In fact, it appeared another society altogether.
