There is a good, commodious audience-room at the rear, and several smaller rooms about the premises. The front part is owned and controlled by a brother who has a family of Christians to live there and run the restaurant on the first floor and the lodging rooms on the two upper floors, where there are accommodations for a few young men.

Back of the audience-room is a great quadrangle, planted with trees, flowers and vines. White marble walks radiate from a marble platform and fountain basin in the center, and divide the garden into beds which, we are told, were filled with soil brought from Cashmere because of its richness. And even to-day gardeners say that it is more productive than any found in this part of the country.

As long as Alexander and Frederick William were in the large hall, they only desired to be the guests of their kind hosts, and affable and unassuming members of the party; no sooner, however, had they crossed the threshold of their audience-room than they were again the king and the emperor, whom no one was allowed to approach without being requested.

"Well, then, I will receive him," said the emperor, rising. "Conduct the ambassador to the small audience-room. Well?" asked the emperor, wonderingly, when the chamberlain did not withdraw. "You do not go? Do you wish to tell me any thing else?" "I do, your majesty. A courier has just arrived from Paris with pressing dispatches from Count Metternich to your majesty."

When we reached the grounds, the heat, together with my nervous anxiety, made me feel as if I were about ready to collapse, and to feel that my address was not going to be a success. When I entered the audience-room, I found it packed with humanity from bottom to top, and there were thousands outside who could not get in. The room was very large, and well suited to public speaking.

Well, perhaps you are right, my dear general. At all events, it will be seen soon who are right, those who wish to procrastinate, or those who are in favor of immediate and decisive action." He nodded pleasantly to Blucher, and then called General Scharnhorst to his side, turning, like the king, back to the audience-room.

At his second tap the door opened and the Cardinal came out, taking him by the arm without a word; and together they turned to the lift entrance. Percy ventured to make a remark as they slid noiselessly up towards the papal apartment. "I am surprised at the lift, your Eminence, and the typewriter in the audience-room." "Why, father?" "Why, all the rest of Rome is back in the old days."

The Hebrew had little time to repeat his resolve; the head chamberlain interrupted them to lead Hosea into the presence of the "good god." The sovereign awaited Hosea in the smaller audience-room adjoining the royal apartments. It was a stately chamber, and to-day looked more spacious than when, as of yore, it was filled with obsequious throngs.

His Holiness Pope Clement, when his audience-room rang with furious outcries for justice on Benvenuto Cellini, who, as far as half-a-dozen murders could form a title, was as fair a candidate for the gallows as ever swung from that unlucky wood, replied, 'All this is very well, gentlemen: these murders are bad things, we know that.

Come, sire, permit me to offer you my arm as your cavalier, and to conduct you to the buffet, for how exalted soever our position may be, we must not forget that we are men, and that our stomachs sometimes need food." He offered his arm to the king, and conducted him to the small supper-hall adjoining the audience-room.
