A fourth commemorates Captain Gordon and Lieutenant Hensley, of the 82nd Foot, also victims of the Gwalior Contingent. In the right of the nave there is a tablet "Sacred to the memory of Philip Hayes Jackson, who, with Jane, his wife, and her brother Ralf Blyth Croker, were massacred by rebels at Cawnpore on 27th June."

The others were, the reverend J. Bidlake, of Plymouth; Joseph Storrs, of Chesterfield; William Fothergill, of Carr End, Yorkshire; J. Seymour, of Coventry; Moses Neave, of Poole; Joseph Taylor, of Scarborough; Timothy Clark, of Doncaster; Thomas Davis, of Milverton; George Croker Fox, of Falmouth; Benjamin Grubb, of Clonmell in Ireland; Sir William Forbes, of Edinburgh; the reverend J. Jamieson, of Forfar; and Joseph Gurney, of Norwich; the latter of whom sent up a remittance, and intelligence at the same time, that a committee, under Mr.

Croker tells us that the great Marquis of Montrose was beheaded at Edinburgh in 1650. There is not a forward boy at any school in England who does not know that the Marquis was hanged. Macaulay's Essays, ed. 1843, i. 357 It is observable that men of the first rank spelt very ill in the last century. In the first of these letters I have preserved the original spelling. See ante, i., 127.

The mustached warrior looks ferocious his eyes dart flame. "And who causes the high prices, sir? Who makes the money a rag? I answer the forestallers and engrossers do you know any, sir?" "I do not, sir!" "That is singular!" And Colonel Desperade twirls his mustache satirically looking at the pompous Mr. Croker in a manner which makes that worthy turn scarlet.

Croker's sharp common-sense at once suggested the abolition of the Laureate duties, but the retention of the office as a sinecure. Walter Scott, to whom the place was offered, as the most popular of living poets, seconded the counsel of Croker, but declined the appointment, as beneath the dignity of the intended founder of a long line of border knights. He recommended Southey.

No 22. CROKER. At this house 'Johnson owned that he always found a good dinner. Post, April 15, 1778. This has been circulated as if actually said by Johnson; when the truth is, it was only supposed by me. 'Don't let them be patriots, he said to Mr. Hoole, when he asked him to collect a city Club. Post, April 6, 1781. See p. 7 of this volume.

I'm going on for a dry log that I know of. You wait until I come back." Roscoe set to work upon a spruce, but he could scarcely strike out a chip. After a little he was compelled to drop his axe, and lean against the tree, exhausted. At intervals he resumed his cutting. It was half an hour before the small tree fell. Then he waited for Croker. Behind him his trail was already obliterated.

The independents were anxious to have him make a campaign against the Old Guard of both the standard parties, fighting Richard Croker, the cynical Tammany boss, on the one side, and Thomas C. Platt, the "easy boss" of the Republicans, on the other. Tom Platt did not want him at all.

Indeed without this emendation it would not be easy to construe the words, even if thnaton could bear the meaning which Mr. Croker ascribes to it without imminent danger of a flogging. Mr. Croker has also given us a specimen of his skill in translating Latin. Johnson wrote a note in which he consulted his friend, Dr. Lawrence, on the propriety of losing some blood.

But this must be, and in my little lodging I will be lonely enough. Had a very kind letter from Croker disowning the least idea of personal attack in his answer to Malachi. Reading at intervals a novel called Granby; one of that very difficult class which aspires to describe the actual current of society, whose colours are so evanescent that it is difficult to fix them on the canvas.
