"He certainly will," he said, in no doubtful fashion. "He'll be along before the Sleepers wake. Say, An-ina, I'm not wise to many things. But there's one I know, like like nothing else. The North can't beat Uncle Steve." The dark eyes lit with a feeling which even Marcel realized. "Marcel good. But An-ina, too, know he come sure."

"Let me take her up stairs, Bea you look tired;" and Bea handed the precious charge over, and Olive went slowly up stairs, with her arms tenderly clasped about the little form, her cheeks laid to the soft baby face, and a look in her eyes that mother might have read had she seen it. The sleepers already there, and sprawled about in characteristic attitudes, was a sight to hold one's gaze.

The sleepers being returned to their places, Chris and his friends mounted and rode to the camp, which was placed behind a long, low ridge which screened it from the sight of the enemy on the opposite hills, although within easy range of their heavy guns.

Out from the shacks and tents crept the day's sleepers for a night of revelry; along the trails rode others eager for excitement; it was the harvest-time of those birds of prey in saloon and gambling hell. Hamlin saw all this, but gave the surroundings little thought. He was of the West, of the frontier, and beheld nothing unique in the scene.

There was a difference of opinion among them, some declaring that it was as good as ever, and the others shaking their heads solemnly, as they prophesied all manner of dire things if the through train, with its heavy sleepers, attempted to go over.

At night, from the roof to which the nurses retired after prayers for a breath of air, lower surrounding roofs were seen to be covered with sleepers. Children dozed precariously on the edge of eternity; men and women sprawled in the grotesque postures of sleep. There was a sort of feverish irritability in the air.

"No, I don't think so," replied Phil. "You should be used to this sort of thing by this time." "I don't care as long as the food holds out. It doesn't make any difference where they take us." "What section does this car go out on tonight, steward?" questioned Phil. "The last. Goes out with the sleepers." "That explains it.

The tumbled, discoloured bed linen actually preserved the impressions of the sleepers. There was no doubt that these impressions were ancient, for all sorts of floating dirt had accumulated on the sheets and coverlets. "Who could have slept here, do you think?" interrogated Maskull. "The observatory staff?" "More likely travellers like ourselves. They left suddenly."

But even that incident failed to arouse them thoroughly, though it filled the rats with temporary horror, and caused them to flee. The last word reminds us that there were others there that night, besides rats, to disturb the sleepers' dreams but we merely make a suggestive hint at that! Soon the rats returned in greater force and more demonstrative hilarity than ever.

As to Rellihan, they did not feel like stooping so low as to waste words on the impassive giant who personified an ignorant insolence that made no account of personalities. They adventured in no move against that obstacle in their path, either by concerted attack or individual effort to pass. They looked like wakened sleepers who were struggling with the problems proposed in a nightmare.
