The Queen of Roumania bowed to the throng with utmost grace, smiling and showing her brilliant teeth; but whether the special huzzas were a tribute to the beauty of the Queen, or to the poetry of Carmen Sylva, we could not determine.

Somehow a slow rotary motion had been imparted to it during the process of abandoning ship. The little fighting ship pointed as though wistfully at all the stars about her, to none of which she would ever drive again. The Sylva loomed up. The last space-boat nestled into its blister and the grapples clanked. The leaves closed.

He was in the act of casting a mooring rope off a fixed capstan when De Sylva shot him between the shoulder-blades. "On board, all of you!" shrieked the ex-President in a frenzy. "At 'em, boys!" gasped Coke, though scarce able to stagger another foot. The men needed no bidding.

His apparent gravity drew the girl's thoughts for an instant from contemplating her own unhappiness. "How could you have done that?" she asked. "We are going there to suit Senhor De Sylva's ends. We have suffered so much already for his sake that we could hardly betray him now." Hozier spread wide his hands with a fine affectation of amazement. "I wasn't talking about De Sylva," he cried.

Kreynborg threw the switch back again. "Der screen is on," he chuckled. "Console each other, children. I am glad you came, Thorn Hardt. We watch der grand refiew of der Com-Pub fleet. Then I turn a little infention of mine upon you. It is a heat-ray of fery limited range. It will be my method of wooing der fair Sylva.

He cared not a jot how the Brazilians slaughtered each other so long as De Sylva established the new regime speedily. "I never was a fightin' man meself," murmured Watts weakly. "That sort of thing gives me a sinkin' sensation in me innards." "Wot you want is a drink, me boy," said Coke. Watts brightened. He drew a deep breath. "I reelly believe that's wot's wrong with me," he said.

Unfortunately for us, all the bother centers round Senhor De Sylva, to whom we owe our lives. He is outside at the moment, showing our skipper the lay of the land before the light fails, so I am free to speak plainly. When he is dead there will be no further trouble, till the next revolution. But why endeavor to look ahead when seeing is impossible?

"Why?" said Riego, "famished men are good for nothing, either to fight or fly and we must wait for the farrier." "True," said Falkland, "but " he stopped abruptly. Sylva had his eyes on his face at that moment. Falkland's colour suddenly changed: he turned round with a loud cry. "Up! up! Riego! Sylva! We are undone the soldiers are upon us!" "Arm!" cried Riego, starting up.

The center plank was turned up at one end. This was the catamaran, which de Sylva had dignified by the name of boat. The primitive craft rested in a black pool in which the stars trembled, though they were hardly visible as yet in the brighter sky.

It has to commence *mence with sight and touch; it has to handle, weigh, and measure its own exuberant sylva of phenomena, and from these to advance to new truths,—truths, that is, which are beyond and distinct from the phenomena from which they originate.
