The mast was stepped and a mere rag of sail hoisted, but this was sufficient to drive the boat through the water at a great speed. A bitter wind had chopped the incoming tide into a quite respectable imitation of a rough sea. There were three men in each boat. In order that all aboard might become familiar with the workings of the machinery, it was decided that there should be turn and turn about in the matter of steering and operating the craft.
