The grotesques, so often a stumbling-block to painters, who forget that the words of a poet, which only feebly present an image to the mind, must be lowered in key when translated into visible form, make one regret that he has not rather chosen for illustration the more subdued imagery of the Purgatorio.

Parsons for extracts from the "Inferno," that of Mr. Dayman for those from the "Purgatorio," and that of Mr. Longfellow for those from the "Paradiso." The first question to ask in regard to a simile found in verse is, Is it poetical?

Perhaps the belief was reinforced by the teaching of Socrates, who, in the vision of Er, in the "Republic," brings back, in a myth, the old popular faith in a Purgatorio, if not in an Inferno. In the "Phaedo," for certain, we come to the very definite account of a Hell, a place of eternal punishment, as well as of a Purgatory, whence souls are freed when their sins are expiated.

Philip, in no mood for international amenities, merely bowed. "Italy too," the other continued a little resentfully, "is a great country. She has produced many famous men for example Garibaldi and Dante. The latter wrote the 'Inferno, the 'Purgatorio, the 'Paradiso. The 'Inferno' is the most beautiful."

But that poor insect, that remains there suspended between heaven and earth, shall I say hell, what am I to think of it?" The dragonfly was still there. She continued "En purgatorio, ah Dios, tu quedas en purgatorio," as if the fly had represented the unhappy young pirate's soul in limbo. Oh, let no one smile at the quaintness of the dying fancy of the poor heart crushed girl.

He admired Calderon, both for his poetry and his dramatic genius; but it shows his judgement and originality that, though greatly struck by his first acquaintance with the Spanish poet, none of his peculiarities crept into the composition of "The Cenci"; and there is no trace of his new studies, except in that passage to which he himself alludes as suggested by one in "El Purgatorio de San Patricio".

But I imagine you must certainly have learnt to do without us. Now I ought to go to your father." But Marcella held her. "Do you remember in the Purgatorio, mamma, the lines about the loser in the game: 'When the game of dice breaks up, he who lost lingers sorrowfully behind, going over the throws, and learning by his grief'? Do you remember?" Mrs.

I have followed Dante with deepest sympathy through the "Inferno" and the "Purgatorio;" and when I emerged from the infernal slough, I washed myself, as does the poet, with the water of the sea at the foot of the Mountain of Purgatory. I enjoyed the divine morning, the pure air.

The style is close knit with the earlier music. A pervading motive is the former brief phrase of aspiration; upon it the angelic groups seem to wing their flight between verses of praise. By a wonderful touch the sigh, that appeared inverted in the plaintive chant of the Purgatorio, is finally glorified as the motive of the bass to the words of exultation.

When this is done, as in the examples from Canto XV. of the "Inferno," and Canto VIII. of the "Purgatorio," what an instantaneous vivification of the picture! But in the best of them the poetic gleam is not so unlooked-for bright as in the best of Shakespeare's.
