Asaph's fruitless quest in Orham had not shaken her faith. Captain Cy had refused to seek Debby Beasley for information concerning the Thayers, and so she, on her own responsibility, had done so. And this was the ridiculous ending of her journey. The diary had been a forlorn hope; now that was burned. Poor Bos'n! and poor some one else!

She was "up and about," as they say in Orham, and did some housework, after a fashion, but she never again set foot across the granite doorstep of the Winslow cottage. Probably the poor woman's mind was slightly affected; it is charitable to hope that it was.

I suppose you mean that, bein' alone in that house where you've lived since you was born, you naturally get to thinkin' about what used to be." Jed stared wistfully at the back of a chair. "Um-hm," he murmured, "and what might have been and and ain't." The captain nodded. Of all the people in Orham he, he prided himself, was the only one who thoroughly understood Jed Winslow.

"I bet you! There's only one Shavin's in Orham." Jed sighed. "There's consider'ble many squealers," he drawled; "some in sties and some runnin' loose." Major Grover, who had appeared to enjoy this dialogue, interrupted it now. "That would seem to settle the spy question," he said. "You may go, all three of you," he added, turning to the carpenters.

'Twas a mean, black night for a drive as fur as Orham and Peter looked surprised. He started to say something, then swallered it down, and told Eddie he'd see to the harnessing. When Small was out of sight, I says: "You don't cal'late he heard what Milo was telling, do you, Peter?" says I. Peter T. shook his head and winked, first at Jonadab and then at me.

I b'lieve 'twas what they call a "coat-of-arms," but it looked more like a patchwork comforter than it did like any coat ever I see. The envelope was addressed to "Captain Jonadab Wixon, Orham, Mass." I took my turn at twisting the thing around, and then I hands it back to Jonadab. "I pass," I says. "Where'd you get it?" "'Twas in my box," says he. "Must have come in to-night's mail."

The depot master shook his head. "Don't know, Bailey," he answered, dryly. "I'll have to visit both places 'fore I give an opinion. I HAVE been to South Orham, but the neighborhood that your friend Gabe compared it to I ain't seen yet. I put on that 'yet," he added, with a wink, "'cause I knew Sim Phinney would if I didn't." Captain Bailey rose and covered a yawn with a plump hand.

Captain Obed Bangs, who had been spending a week in Orham on business connected with his fish weirs, returned to find the village chanting the praises of the new arrival. Somehow or other E. Holliday had managed already to convey the impression that he was the most important person in creation.

Armstrong and, as if in answer to that look, she spoke. "Yes, Mr. Winslow," she said, quickly, "my brother is coming to Orham and Captain Hunniwell has given him the position. It is really you to whom he owes it all. You thought of it and spoke to the captain and to me." "But why in time," demanded Captain Sam, "didn't you tell me right out that 'twas Mrs. Armstrong's brother you had in mind?

"I knew I put it somewheres," he said. "It's a letter for you, Elsie. Josiah, here, he brought it down from the post-office when he come from school this afternoon. I meant to give it to you afore." Captain Eri, who sat next to the young lady, noticed that the envelope was addressed in an irregular, sprawling hand to "Miss Elizabeth Preston, Orham, Mass."
