Henri de Saussure, "Observations sur les moeurs de divers oiseaux du Mexique," Arch. Sci. phys. et natur., 1859, pp. 21-41. The provisions collected by these two birds reveal a remarkable fact. They possess indeed two distinct diets; they do not preserve for the period of famine the overplus of the foods which they consume in the period of abundance.
'You shall have a little one by De Leyre, that was given me by a young French lady who was staying at Endelstow House: "Je l'ai plante, je l'ai vu naitre, Ce beau rosier ou les oiseaux," &c.; and then I shall want to give you my own favourite for the very last, Shelley's "When the lamp is shattered," as set to music by my poor mother.
At ease on soft couches, in hanging gardens set with fountains, these beings feasted with every refinement of cruelty. Kneeling slaves were their living tables; while for their food Tous les oiseaux de l'air, tous les poissons de l'onde, Tout ce qui vole ou nage ou rampe dans le monde, Mourant pour leur plaisir des plus cruels trepas De sanglantes savours composent leurs repas. . . .
The man who shaped not only the deliberately infantine "Ma Mère l'Oye," but also things as quiveringly simple and expressive and songful as "Oiseaux tristes," as "Sainte," as "Le Gibet," or the "Sonatine," as the passacaglia of the Trio or the vocal interlude in "Daphnis et Chloé," has a pureness of feeling that we have lost.
Jasmin added several other poems to his collection before his second volume appeared in 1835. Amongst these were his lines on the Polish nation Aux debris de la Nation Polonaise, and Les Oiseaux Voyageurs, ou Les Polonais en France both written in Gascon. Saint-beuve thinks the latter one of Jasmin's best works.

Having been enriched by a large dowry, he has been by turns deputy, secretary, vice-president, president, head of committees, under secretary of State, in one word, everything that it was possible to be. For the time being he rants against the clergy, and his wife, who is ugly, rich, and pious, has just put their little girl into the Oiseaux school.
A youthful, vigorous soul lay in the glance which was fixed upon this cup; she understood every thing.
Ninon christened the society "Oiseaux des Tournelles," an appellation much coveted by the beaux and wits of Paris, and which distinguished the chosen company from the less favored gentlemen of the great metropolis.
