The king's friends had for some time been losing strength in England, and Yorktown completed their defeat. In March, 1782, Lord North's ministry resigned.

Ruth, still annoyed, found a place by the organ, while Sue slipped over by Joy, and putting her arm through hers carelessly, joined in the hymns with interest and fervor. Blue Bonnet had been a pupil at Miss North's school a little over three months now, and although she had had her share of fun and frolic, the greater portion of the time had been spent in serious work.

Surely, then, as the jury had disagreed once, and we had to defend ourselves afresh, we were entitled to proper conference with our papers before us. This al fresco chat was the last of Judge North's "opportunities." At ten o'clock we were once more in the Old Bailey dock, fronting the judge and jury, surrounded by an eager crowd, and beginning a second fight for liberty and perhaps for life.

That was the only time Betty heard Senator North's name mentioned during Burleigh's visit, for the younger man was much more interested in himself and the object of his holiday. "I think if it hadn't been for this Extra Session I should have followed you to California," he said abruptly.

It wasn't going to be such an easy thing to tear up root and leave Miss North's after four years as she had imagined. How was she ever going to get along without the girls? There was Sue dear old, impulsive, warm-hearted Sue, companion in so many escapades. And Ruth, and Wee Watts Blue Bonnet, too! The parting was going to be especially hard with Blue Bonnet.

And I was so close to him I could have put an apple in his pocket," Joe explained. "Who was the man?" asked Moxlow. "I thought he looked like John North," said Montgomery. There was the silence of death in the room. "You thought it was John North?" began Moxlow. "Yes." "When he spoke, you thought you recognized North's voice?" "Yes." "Were you sure?" "I was pretty sure, boss " "Only pretty sure?"

Now at a sign from the coroner, Conklin placed his fat hands on the arms of his chair and slowly drew himself out of its depths, then he crossed to North. The young fellow rose, and turned a pale face toward him. "John," said the sheriff gently, "I have an unpleasant duty to perform." In spite of himself the pallor deepened on North's face.

The deeds of her great men, the history of the past, were an equal heritage of all we felt bound together by natural bonds equal to the ties of blood or kindred. We loved her towering mountains, her rolling prairies, her fertile fields, her enchanting scenery, her institutions, her literature and arts, all; all were equally the South's as well as the North's.

Meeting Tom North's troubled glance, he grinned broadly. "Told you we'd have Johnson on our necks," he remarked, jerking his thumb up river toward a rapidly approaching figure. This soon defined itself as a tall, sun-reddened, very blond individual with a choleric blue eye. "What in hell's the matter here?" he yelled, as soon as he came within hearing distance.

A melancholy wind raked the bare hills which rose beyond the flats, and found its way across half the housetops in Mount Hope to the solitary window that gave light and air to John North's narrow cell.
