Joan had curled herself up in a corner of the oak settle, which stood as a screen on one side of the corner fireplace, and had fallen fast asleep there, when she was aroused by Nathan's voice. He spoke so quietly and sadly that it did not quite awake her, and her drowsy ears took in the sound as if he had been talking to some one a long way off.
"But all this that you are saying is quite true and just," said he. "If it were not, how could you make it tell against Nathan's book?" asked Lousteau. "That is the first manner of demolishing a book, my boy; it is the pickaxe style of criticism. But there are plenty of other ways. Your education will complete itself in time.
The beam is narrowed as it is focussed into greater brilliance, and the personal Messiah begins to be faintly discerned in words which are to have a partial, preparatory fulfilment, in itself prophetic, in the collective Davidic monarchs whose office is itself a prophecy. This passage is the wonderful burst of praise which sprang from David's heart in answer to Nathan's words.
"And my father," said Nathan, putting down his foot in a very positive air, "my father told me himself, that a balloon was about as high as my head." The boys disputed some time longer upon the subject, and finally, when Rollo came out of the house, they both appealed to him very eagerly to settle the dispute. "Isn't a balloon higher than Nathan's head?" said James.
But it formed no part of honest Nathan's designs to be left behind. His feelings were too deeply involved in the fate of the unhappy individuals, whose misadventures he could, or thought he could, so clearly trace to his own indiscretion, to suffer him to rest, while it was yet wrapped in obscurity.
A parachute, such as is used with balloons, is a great deal larger than any umbrella that ever was made. What was Nathan's wish, after he had read his father something out of his book? Did he think that he could fly if he had wings? Did his father think so? What deficiency did his father think was even more important than that of wings? Did Nathan think that a boy was stronger than a bird?
She forced herself to go to Madame Nathan's parties from time to time: and being young she managed to enjoy herself in spite of everything. But in that rather mixed society of all sorts of young people Madame Nathan's protegee, being poor and pretty, became at once the mark of two or three young gentlemen, who with perfect confidence in themselves picked her out for their attentions.
At these times, as he sat alone in his garret-room, Malachi's chuckle, without cause or reminder would suddenly ring in his ears, or some low strain from his father's violin or a soft note from Nathan's flute would float through his brain. "Dear Uncle Nat," he would break out, speaking aloud and springing from his chair "I wish I could hear you tonight."
But there was that in the grim visage, withered with age, and seamed with many a scar, in the mutilated, but bony and still nervous hand lying on the broad naked chest, and in the recollections of the past they recalled to Nathan's brain, which awoke a feeling not less exciting, if less unworthy, than fear.
He heard the whispered recognition of its inmate, and stood like a statue while Hatchie freed himself from his confinement. "Whisht, now," said Pat, in a low voice; "give me your hand, Mr. Binson. Now, there yous are," and he placed Uncle Nathan's hand in that of Hatchie. Uncle Nathan found the hand was warm, and felt completely relieved of the sensation of fear which had come over him.
