In September 1878 the Ameer, Shere Ali, Dost Mohammed's son and successor, refused admission to a British envoy: his refusal was treated as an insolent challenge, and our peaceful mission became a hostile invasion. There was some sharp fighting in the passes; but Jellalabad was ours by the end of December, and Candahar very soon afterwards.
"True," he exclaimed, "I had forgotten that!" "Well, then, uncle " "He had accomplished his commission, I suppose," continued he. "Yes," I replied. "And as you were dead, and Mohammed's commission formed part of my inheritance from you, I thought that it was my duty " "Bigre!" said my uncle, "you know how to act the heir very well, you do!"
Instead of these he exhibits a flat piece of rock bearing marks resembling the shape of a man's foot the imprint of Mohammed's foot, miraculously made. To one whose soulful gaze has been enraptured with an imprint of the first Sultan's hand on the wall of St.
Then Masrur read him the mandate of the Prince of True Believers, Harun al-Rashid, to which he replied, "I hear and I obey," and forthwith despatched him, with a company of his followers, to Abu Mohammed's house. When they reached it, they knocked at the door, whereupon a page came out and Masrur said to him, "Tell thy lord, The Commander of the Faithful summoneth thee."
In the first years of the strife yet another duty was most emphatically impressed on the Faithful; jihad, i.e., readiness to sacrifice life and possessions for the defence of Islam, understood, since the conquest of Mecca in 630, as the extension by force of arms of the authority of the Moslim state, first over the whole of Arabia, and soon after Mohammed's death over the whole world, so far as Allah granted His hosts the victory.
"Safdar Khan of Kohara. May God keep your Highness in health. We have waited long for your presence." "What are you doing in Lahore?" asked Shere Ali. In the darkness he saw a flash of white as Safdar Khan smiled. "There was a little trouble, your Highness, with one Ishak Mohammed and Ishak Mohammed's son is still alive. He is a boy of eight, it is true, and could not hold a rifle to his shoulder.
In this way he does not perceive the great importance of the history of the Abraham legend in Mohammed's conception. Moreover, the translation of the verses of the Qoran on p. 29 sometimes says more than the original. Lil-nas is not "to mankind" but "to men," in the sense of "to everybody."
The scraps which contained in writing the sayings of the dead Prophet were all collected by his chief amanuensis: his followers appointed three judges to overlook the work. The new collection was written in Mohammed's own pure Meccan dialect, and every spurious copy was burnt.
Mohammed's Paradise, by the by, is not a greater failure than Dante's. See also lvi. 24- 26. Moreover the Moslems, far more logical than Christians, admit into Paradise the so-called "lower animals."
The interior of the Hedjra was cleared, and three deep graves were found in the inside, full of rubbish; but the author of this history, who himself entered it, saw no traces of tombs. The original place of Mohammed's tomb was ascertained with great difficulty. The walls of the Hedjra were then rebuilt, and the iron railing placed round it which is now there.
