Malone, who allows the total fortune of Mary Arden to have been 110L 13s 4d., is sure that the value of Asbies could not have been more than one hundred pounds. But why? Because, says he, the "average" rent of land at that time was no more than three shillings per acre. But this writer objects to Malone's principle of valuation.

In passing the door of Mrs. Malone's den, some strange, unaccountable impulse constrained him to knock. Yes; he suddenly made up his mind that he would confide in her and why not? She was always so understanding, sympathetic and wise. In reply to a shrill "Come in," he entered and found the old lady sitting by the open window with a black cat on her lap.

Malone's patent of precedence as Prime Sergeant was cancelled; the speaker was dismissed from the Privy Council, and the surplus revenue was withdrawn from the Vice-Treasurer, by a King's letter. The indignation of the Dubliners at these outrages rose to the utmost pitch.

His eyes were glowing beacons of triumph and his lips wore a smile of victory. "Tonight I have met and defeated Malone's attempt to crush me," he announced with a half-savage elation. "Tomorrow the financial world will recognize in me the actual and unchallenged head of Coal and Ore." Then, turning to Jefferson, he added: "You know what that signifies, Edwardes."

Harrison rose and walked to the rail. He stood for a moment looking out, then came back and spoke quickly. "If this is to be done we should let no more time slip by. It's a safe bet that he isn't wasting days." Malone's fist crashed down on the arm of his chair. He rose, too, and paced backward and forward, talking as he walked. "Waste time! By heaven, we must waste no minute.

"Well, anyway, I think there is a rule that if a crew rescue their own craft under circumstances of extreme peril, they come in as salvors. I'll look it up in Malone's books when we get back." At that moment their ears caught a cheering from the dock, which came to them as a small sound almost lost over the immense flat sea.

"Got no fire arms nor whiskey?" growled the mate, looking through the door at his new men. Both answered in the negative. "All right; step lively now. We want to raise that waterline 'igh enough to work in the waves before we reach th' Channel." The lads shut the door after them, then started under Malone's direction for whatever work he had.

But the upper half of the door stood open, and the afternoon sun slanted across the earthen floor and brightened the dishes that stood on the old dresser. It even showed Grannie Malone's bed in the far end of the room, and some of her clothes hanging from the rafters overhead.

In point of fact it appears that Shakspeare did owe debts in all directions, and was able to use whatever he found, and the amount of indebtedness may be inferred from Malone's laborious computations in regard to the First, Second, and Third parts of Henry VI., in which, "out of 6,043 lines, 1,771 were written by some author preceding Shakspeare, 2,373 by him, on the foundations laid by his predecessors, and 1,899 were entirely his own."

Mabel was not out that day, she was naturally rather delicate, and had drooped very much of late, indeed, she had not been right since the night of Mrs. Malone's death, and this added a new cause for anxiety to Minnie's already troubled mind.
