LXIX. In the meantime Pompey, by the great delay which this occasioned, being informed of what had happened, marched with the fifth legion, which he called away from their work to support his party; and at the same time his cavalry were advancing up to ours, and an army in order of battle was seen at a distance by our men who had taken possession of the camp, and the face of affairs was suddenly changed.
I shall end this paper with that whole epigram, which represents with much humour my honest friend's condition. The like specimens of the "high praises of the Lord" we have in Ps. lxix. 34. As the three ranks of worshippers here presented in vision to John, beautifully harmonize in holy exercises, each in its appropriate sphere; so the "animals and elders," the rulers and ruled of the church, take precedence of all others in acts of solemn worship, and also close the solemn service, saying, "Amen."

The man in the gospel made the desperate condition of his child an argument with Christ to haste his cure: "Sir, come down," saith he, "ere my child die;" John iv. 49, and Christ regarded his haste, saying, "Go thy way; thy son liveth;" ver. 50. Haste requires haste. David was for speed; "Deliver me speedily;" "Hear me speedily;" "Answer me speedily;" Psalm xxxi. 2; lxix. 17; cii. 2.

Not otherwise, at an earlier date, 'Sermo' and 'Verbum' contended for the honour of rendering the 'Logos' of St. John; though here there can be no serious doubt on which side the advantage lay, and that in 'Verbum' the right word was chosen. Forschungen, vol. v. p. lxix, and elsewhere, has much interesting instruction on the subject.
