"You must have been looking at the clouds, Carter." "Naw, suh, I'se been lookin' right out yer, an' I ain' seen you. Is you gwine ter 'lect de gov'nor?" Galt was holding his daughter high enough to reach the branches of an elm. "I'm trying to, Carter," he returned good-humouredly, "but I can't do it by myself. Won't you lend a hand?" "I'll len' 'em bofe, if you want 'em, boss.

And why are the philosophers to be judged according to a different rule? On what ground can it be asserted that the Stoics believed in the actual existence of their God-like perfection in any individual? or that they meant more than this "To no man can the name of the Wise be given in its absolute sense, who is not perfect even as his Father in heaven is perfect!" Ib. Lect. XXI. p. 225.

British Critic, April 1839, "State of Religious Parties," p. 405. Cardinal Newman, Grammar of Assent. The argument from history is sketched fairly, but only sketched in The Prophetic Office, Lect. xiv.

"By speculative Masonry we learn to subdue our passions, to act upon the square, to keep a tongue of good report, to maintain secrecy, and practise charity." Lect. of Fel. Craft. But this is a very meagre definition, unworthy of the place it occupies in the lecture of the second degree.

"Honey," said Candace, mysteriously, after she had drawn Mary out of the room, "don't ye go for to troublin' yer mind wid dis yer. I'm clar Mass'r James is one o' de 'lect; and I'm clar dar's consid'able more o' de 'lect dan people tink. Why, Jesus didn't die for nothin', all dat love a'n't gwine to be wasted. De 'lect is more'n you or I knows, honey!

Oliver, referring to the "twelve grand points in Masonry," which formed a part of the old English lectures, says, "When the candidate was intrusted, he represented Asher, for he was then presented with the glorious fruit of masonic knowledge, as Asher was represented by fatness and royal dainties." Hist. Landm., vol. i. lect. xi. p. 313.

And in the declaration, whosoever hath sinned against me, him will I blot out of my book, he discovers an intimation, that that offending people should die short of the promised land! A discovery without a clew. This sin of Israel was pardoned. Sentence of death in the wilderness was occasioned by a subsequent act of rebellion, as will be shewn in the sequel.* * Vid. Hunter's Lect. Vol. iv.

In Irish, too, Deluain, Monday, moon's day, shows Pagan origin of names of week days. The literal translation of the Latin Dies Dominica, the Lord's Day, is not found in the name given to the first day of the week in any European tongue, save Portuguese, where the days of the week hold the old Catholic names, domingo, secunda feira, terca feira, etc. Rom. in VI. lect. St.

It seems to me tantamount to saying "I force that man to do so or so without my forcing him." But however that may be, the following sentences are more precious than diamonds. They are divine. Ib. Lect. XI. p. 113.

"Sergeant Coffin," said Billy. "He air right badly hurt! He was the first man at the gun. He fired, an' then he got hold of the sponge staff and laid about him he was that gallant. The men ought to 'lect him back. He sure did well." The nearest house flung open its doors. "Bring him right in here oh, poor soldier! Right here in the best room! Run, Maria, and turn down the bed. Oh, poor boy!
