Not Turks and Hindoos alone have a tendency to believe in their Kismet. It is human to believe in that. And we grasp at every event that seems to favor the belief. The other evening, in the twilight, I passed two respectable-looking women who seemed like domestic servants; and I caught one sentence which one said to the other with great apparent faith.
While the two were now turned away towards the Kismet, Andree came to Delia. She did not quite know how to comfort her, but she was a woman, and perhaps a supporting arm would do something. "There, there," she said, passing a hand round her shoulder, "you are all right now. Don't cry!" With a gasp of horror, Delia got to her feet, but swayed, and fell fainting into Andree's arms.
At one moment I believed her to be Latin, at the next I was positive that she was Teutonic. I could not discover a single weak point, unless impulsiveness shall be called weakness; this sign of impulsiveness was visible in the lips. The other well, I couldn't help it. It was Kismet, fate, the turn in the road, what you will. I fell heels over head in love with her at once.
Said's puzzled face recalled him to himself and he translated, adding: "It's rotten luck for you, Sheik, but it's kismet. All things are ordained," he concluded almost shyly, feeling himself the worst kind of Job's comforter. The Arab shrugged. "To those who believe," he repeated gloomily, "and I, my friend, have no beliefs. What would you?
Facing her, he lifted his scarlet visor, meeting her stare with his wistful and diffident smile. "You see," he said, readjusting the mask. "But what does this mean?" "Do you remember our talk on the way home after Kismet four hours or several years ago: which is it?" "I remember we talked ..."
These dormer window chambers were rarely used, and, excepting during the semi-annual house cleaning, rarely visited. That one of these rare visits should have been paid one of them upon this particular day of which we are writing was simply Kismet. But of that a little later. Let us finish our picture of lovely Woodbine.
"Faith, but they they've killed him!" He flung a passionate hand at the basket, in which, prone across the golden spout, the still body of Lombardo was lying. "They've killed as brave a man " "We all saw what he did, Major," the chief said quietly. "Dr. Lombardo owed us all a debt, and he has paid it. This is Kismet! Control yourself, Major. The price of such brave adventure is often death."
They take everything that happens to them with the philosophy of their faith. Kismet! It is their fate, may Allah be praised! they say. I was perfectly satisfied to accommodate myself to circumstances; and gathered flowers, according to wise old Herrick's advice, to my heart's content. I did not seek to inquire about the future: why should I?
But at this point fickle Kismet, who for a day had played with him bitterly and sardonically, decided to reward him in full for the amusement he had afforded her. Kismet turned the tawny eyes of the snake charmer to the camel. Kismet led her to lean toward the man beside her and say, "Who's that? That camel?" They all gazed. "Darned if I know."
When a dripping orderly came to rouse you to see some case, you understood perfectly the attitude of mind that has produced the idea of Kismet. Why move? If the man dies, it is Allah's will. It is Allah's will that he is sick. Let him remain in the hands of Allah. It was during the afternoon and evening that heat-stroke occurred in the main when the humidity of the air began to go up.
