Here I found assembled a large company of pleasure-seekers in holiday attire, some lounging under the trees, others in groups at pic-nic, and not a small proportion of the gentlemen regaling themselves at the refreshment stalls or temporary cafés, erected on the grounds, on mint juleps and iced sangarees.
"He's done gone," she sharply answered, for by now her heart was beating with strong resentment against entire mankind. "What you want 'im fer?" "Nothing, so long as he isn't here," Brent turned away. But she was following. After all, he did come to the little girl's relief even though his intimacy with juleps had spoiled the offer.
Juleps were not mixed openly that day but the speakers had pitchers full of something that seemed to refresh their eloquence, no less than themselves. They hammered each other lustily, cheered to the echo by uproarious partisans, from nine in the morning until six in the afternoon. Luckily for them, there were four of them, thus they could "spell" each other and the audience.
Bob and myself were soon talking over old times and sipping juleps, until at last we got a stack of chips and a deck of cards, and began to play for a small limit. Presently a tall, portly, fine looking gentleman came up to the table, and appeared to be so interested that I invited him to take a hand, as we were playing for a small limit just to pass away time.
I made room for it beside the case of champagne on the cellar shelf and wondered how they would stand it all. We don't have champagne often in Hillsboro, and when we do nobody seems to want to cut down on the juleps, consequently well, nothing ever really happens! However, it must have been the champagne that made Tom act as he did. He was never like that before.
As for New Orleans, in spring-time, just when the orchards were flushing over with peach-blossoms, and the sweet herbs came to flavor the juleps it seemed to me the city of the world where you can eat and drink the most and suffer the least. At Bordeaux itself, claret is not better to drink than at New Orleans.
Still, I know Uncle Peter is happier than he ever was before, because he has got me to come to as a refuge from Aunt Augusta, a confidante for his views of life that he is not allowed to express at home, and also the certainty of one of Jasper's juleps. Sallie has grown so dependent on me that my shoulders are assuming a masculine squareness to support her weight.
"But it isn't mine. I picked it up in the car." "All-ee!" Sam again. "I see you down there. I'm making a julep!" Alison turned and called through her hands. "Coming in a moment, Sam," she said, and rose. "It must be very late: Sam is home. We would better go back to the house." "Don't," I begged her. "Anchovies and juleps and Sam will go on for ever, and I have you such a little time.
"If you must be eloquent talk of ice cream or mint juleps or recite a verse about the old swimming pool." Telfer, wetting his finger, thrust it into the air. "The wind is in the north-west; the beasts roar; we will have a storm," he said, winking at Valmore. Banker Walker came into the store, followed by his daughter. She was a small, dark-skinned girl with black, quick eyes.
No collisions to be feared; no running off the track at a speed of ever-so-many unaccountable miles an hour; no cast-iron-voiced conductor at short intervals demanding tickets; no old women with sour babies; no obtrusive boys with double-priced books and magazines; no other boys with peanuts, apples, and pop-corn; nothing, in fact, save one’s own social circle but a civil genie, not of Irish extraction, to fly alongside to mix the juleps and carry the morning paper.
