Saviour's, Southwark, open, rested there awhile. When I returned at the end of two hours, I had to wait another ten minutes until a luncheon tray came out. A bell then rang, which a clerk answered, and in about five minutes, with a 'come this way' I was ushered into the presence of Jackman, who was reading the newspaper with a decanter and a glass of sherry by his side.
Smith, partly incited by Carry's looks, 'it was true that you two of you were brought home by young Jackman. 'Yes, said Fulbert, growing crimson, 'he drove Clement and me home! 'And, said Mr. Audley, 'it was Clement's great distress that kept Felix at home the next morning.
Now go and send Mr Jackman to me; I have a great opinion of that young man's knowledge of medicine and surgery, though he is only an amateur. He will soon tell me whether I have received any hurt that has rendered me incapable of feeling. And at the same time you may convey to that coward, John, my entire forgiveness."
"Stay, then; I will return in a few minutes." Barret retired to his room, whence he quickly returned with shooting coat, knickerbockers, pot-cap and boots, all complete. "`Richard's himself again! Allow me to congratulate you," cried Jackman, shaking his friend by the hand. "But, I say, don't you think it may give the old lady rather a shock as well as a surprise?" Barret looked at Milly.
And then in opposition to his own words he rages out frightfully, and says "I shall never forgive myself Madam, that I, Jemmy Jackman, didn't see it all that morning didn't go straight up-stairs when my boot-sponge was in my hand didn't force it down his throat and choke him dead with it on the spot!"
One after another the wrecked party rose struggling to the surface, and all of them could swim except the boy. Giles Jackman was the first who rose. Treading water and brushing the hair out of his eyes, he gazed wildly about. Barret came up close beside him, almost a moment later. He had barely taken breath, when the others rose at various distances. A cry not far from him caused him to turn.
Seeing that most of those present had lighted their pipes, and that the laird seemed to wish it, Jackman washed down his lunch with a glass of sparkling water, cleared his throat, and began. "Once upon a time," said Jackman, glancing at Junkie and Robin Tips, who sat before him open-mouthed and open-eyed, as if ready to swallow anything...
I shook my head as I uttered this little monosyllable. A flush of surprise went over the girl's face. "Wasn't the letter I gave you from Mrs. Jackson?" she asked. "No; it was from Mrs. Jackman." Mary caught her breath, and stammered out, in her confusion: "Oh, my! I thought it was from Mrs. Jackson. I was sure of it." "What right had you to think any thing about it?" I asked, with marked severity.
It had to do with Time, for Uncle Felix had taken the stopped clock to his room and hidden it there lest somebody like Jackman or Thompson should wind it up. Later, however, he gave it for safer keeping to Maria, because she moved so rarely and did so little that was unnecessary that she seemed the best repository of all.
Then Joe would call them back, to tell them where they fell short, and could improve on the play. "Old Joe seems to see everything that goes on, just as if he had a dozen eyes in his head," remarked Joel Jackman, who was also allowing a sub to take his place in the line-up. "Well, that's what makes him the clever coach he is," Jack told him.
