With a hop and a skip, Marjorie took the shortcut across the fields to Molly's house. It was a beautiful summer morning, and Marjorie didn't stop more than half a dozen times, to watch the crows or the bees or the clouds or a hop-toad. She captured Molly, and after waiting for that dishevelled young person to scramble into a clean frock, the two girls hopped and skipped back again.
"Don't you worry," he said; "it'll come to-morrow. I'll fix it for you." But, anyway, you and I are going to have a good hike, you little raving Raven," I said; "just as soon as we can. I know I haven't seen much of you, Pee-wee, but it isn't because I don't like you." He just said, "Hsh" and went off on tiptoe through the woods, stalking his hop-toad. He's a mighty nice little fellow, Pee-wee is.
For an hour he sat, his brow gloomy, and looked across to where Colonel Ward was talking to Butts, his arms revolving like the fans of a crazy windmill. "Lord! Cap'n Aaron," blurted Hiram at last, "he's pumpin' lies into that shipmate of yourn till even from this distance I can see him swellin' like a hop-toad under a mullein leaf. I tell you, you've got to do something.
Make him let go!" yelled Ramon, dancing in agony. But the professor's long digits were entwined in his locks, and the man of science showed no disposition to let go. "Sa-ay, yo-ou animated hop-toad, I reckin you'd better let go uv ther Mexican gent's draperies, er I'll be compelled ter drill yer, by hemlock."
"To see her creeping around like a little hop-toad and squeaking that rubber bunny why, I declare, I don't believe that anything's been the matter with her at all. You and the doctor lost your nerve, I guess." Three or four days later he was called away again. Their regular routine began. The long, slow days, slid past the house in Bellevue in endless, dreamy procession.
The search for Nimbus proving unavailing they scarcely seemed to expect to find him they began to inquire of the terror-stricken woman the whereabouts of his friend. "Where is 'Liab Hill?" asked the man who held her arm. "What have you done with that snivelling hop-toad minister?" queried another.
Bruce, still dazed by the onslaught, had turned and looked at the door which had closed behind him with a briskness which seemed to say "Good riddance," and muttered, thinking of the clerk's one sanguine suggestion: "Personality! I might as well be a hop-toad."
She had a great face and hanging chops and a very bad colour like a puddock. L.C.J. What is that, mistress? What say you she was like? S. My lord, I ask pardon; I heard Esquire Martin say she looked like a puddock in the face; and so she did. L.C.J. Did you that? Can you interpret her, Mr Attorney? Att. My lord, I apprehend it is the country word for a toad. L.C.J. Oh, a hop-toad! Ay, go on. Att.
Then her legs collapsed, while Miss Mercy boomed that if she did, it was none of Aunt Lizzie's business it was not her hop-toad.
However, his manner was as gay as ever and he began: "You cert'nly are the laziest set o' youngsters I've met sence I was knee-high to a hop-toad. Reckon if anybody'd give me a horse when I was your ages I'd ha' beat the sun a-risin' to see if 't had lived over night. The boys is waiting in the stables, and gettin' pretty cross.
