"Don't be afraid, Ted," Dick called pleasantly. "A joke is all right, and we admit that it was on us." So Ted, after a first start of suspicion, decided to remain where he was. "Hi Martin sent you after his duds, I reckon?" inquired Ted as the other two boys ran up to him. All of Hi's apparel lay on the ground near Teall's feet. "He certainly wanted some one to come," laughed Dick.

"I'll fix you," repeated Dan, Junior, and suddenly aimed a vicious kick at his captor. Had the kick landed where Dan, Junior, intended under Hi's kneecap the latter certainly would have been "fixed." But the country youth was too agile for him. He jumped aside, dragged Dan, Junior, suddenly toward him, and then gave him a backward thrust which sent the lighter boy spinning.

"But where are your clothes, Martin?" asked Tom, staring about him. "Where is anybody's clothes?" The look in Hi's face changed rapidly. He took a few swift, strong strokes that bore him to shore. Then, indeed, Martin's wrath and disgust knew no bounds. For his clothing was as invisible as that of the Central Grammar boys. "Confound that fellow Teall!"

Allen wasn't Hi's own father, I never heard his real name spoken, to my knowledge, and I never once thought of the possibility of his assuming it in place of his stepfather's. "When I discovered your grandfather's identity only a few days ago, the way seemed suddenly open to me.

Again tears of helpless rage formed in Hi's eyes. Amos Garwood stood looking on, unseeing. But Dick Prescott's thoughts were flying like lightning. He knew that, somehow, Garwood ought to be seized and held until the friends searching for him could be notified. "You fellows seem to think that everything is done when you get your own old duds back," complained Hi Martin angrily.

There was a moment's pause. Then a few chuckles came, followed by a few more. "Whoop!" yelled Danny Grin. Snatching the bathing suit bag from Hi's hand, Dalzell got a good hold on the tie strings, then swung the bag, bringing it down on the top of Hi's head. "Run along home, Martin!" jeered Dan.

It was Hi Kendal that restored him, though Hi had no thought of doing so good a deed. It was in this way: A baseball match was on with The Porcupines from near the Fort. To Hi's disgust and the team's dismay Bill failed to appear. It was Hi's delight to stand up for Bill's pitching, and their battery was the glory of the Home team. "Try The Pilot, Hi," said some one, chaffing him.

Both girls laughed as they thought of little Hi's pranks and Randy said, with a bright twinkle in her eyes, "At least, you and Jemima will be amused this winter." "I guess we shall be in more ways than one," assented Belinda, "for I'm pretty sure that Grandma Babson and that small boy will be enemies from the start."

Bill had great confidence in Hi's opinion upon baseball, but he was not prepared to surrender his right of private judgment in matters theological, so he waited for the sermon before committing himself to any enthusiastic approval. This service was an undoubted success. The singing was hearty, and insensibly the men fell into a reverent attitude during prayer.

Sometimes I rose and drove them out, at other times I turned round and feigned to sleep; but these manoeuvres were of no avail; still they poured in, and one old man, more impudent than the rest, understanding the trick, seized my pillow by the end, and, tugging at it as a dog pulls at a quarter of horse, roused me with loud impatient "Whu-hu" and "Hi, hi's," until at last, out of patience, I sent my boots whirling at his head.
