To be a member of Parliament, to speak in that august assembly instead of wasting his eloquence on the beery souls of those who frequented the Cheshire Cheese, to be somebody in the land at his early age, something so infinitely superior to a maker of boots! A member of Parliament was by law an esquire, and therefore a gentleman.
That is the residence of the overseer of the silver-mine, Lawrence Armstrong, Esquire. On that mound a little way on the other side of Pedro's cottage stands another building. It resembles the home of Lawrence, but with enough of difference to afford the charm of variety.
Hughes, vicar of Ware in Hertfordshire, for his excellent Answer to Harm's Scriptural Researches on the Licitness of the Slave-trade, and they enrolled him among their honorary and corresponding members. Also thanks to William Roscoe, esquire, for his Answer to the same. Mr. Roscoe had not affixed his name to this pamphlet any more than to his poem of The Wrongs of Africa.
Here are the facts: In September last a Guard of his Majesty the King of France presented himself with his papers, which appeared to me as much in proper form as foreign papers could seem to me. He presented a petition to me to be permitted to add the names 'de Lincy' and 'Esquire' to his documents. I allowed it. I had no suspicion that the Guard or his papers were impostures.
Now in a while Beltane turned and meeting his look reached out to him his hand. "Dear Benedict," said he, "how much how very much I owe to thee. Thou art methinks the greatest knight that e'er couched lance " "Save thy noble father!" quoth Sir Benedict with solemn nod. "My father you were his esquire and much-loved comrade, Benedict?" "I was, Beltane." "Knew you my mother well, also?"

We pray that it may be enacted, and be it enacted by His Excellency Gabriel Johnson, Esquire, Governor, by and with the advice and consent of his majesty's council, and general assembly of this province, and it is hereby enacted by the authority of the same that the lands formerly allotted the Tuscarora Indians by solemn treaty, lying on Morattock river, in Birtie county, being the same whereon they now dwell.
You are too old for a lady's bower, but not old enough, yet, for an esquire." "Nor could I aspire to such a position, my lord, until I have proved myself worthy of it. My uncle told me that he had suggested that I might be useful as a bearer of messages, and orders; and as I know every foot of the border, from near Berwick to Cumberland, methinks that I might serve you in that way.
"Well," continued the King, as he watched his young esquire keenly, "can you sit there, or are you going to swoon?" The boy smiled scornfully, and the King gave him an encouraging nod. "You will do," he said, "and if you cannot use your arm you will be able to ride between us if we are attacked and charge the scoundrels when we make them run. Mount, Saint Simon. Have we left aught behind?"
Brithwood." "Oh Mr. Halifax. Good-morning." John returned the salutation, which was evidently meant to show that the giver bore no grudge; that, indeed, it was impossible so dignified a personage as Richard Brithwood, Esquire, in his public capacity, too, could bear a grudge against so inferior an individual as John Halifax. "I should be glad, sir, of a few minutes' speech with you."
