Not more recognizably than these, they had been devoted to the varied uses known to advanced civilization in all ages: there were dwellings, and taverns and drinking-houses and eating-houses, and there were those houses where the feet of them that abide therein and of those that frequent them alike take hold on hell.

The roadside drinking-houses were not so numerous as in England, for the Welsh are evidently more temperate in this regard than their neighbors.
