There were a few cavalry affairs at outlying posts, but none of any material importance. The most painful sight that I saw during the war was here at Little Rock this winter. It was the execution, by hanging, on January 8, 1864, of a Confederate spy, by the name of David O. Dodds. He was a mere boy, seemingly not more than nineteen or twenty years old. There was no question as to his guilt.

A bullet struck him in the face, penetrating the brain, and he fell dead. The regiment, hemmed in on every side by overwhelming numbers, with one-fourth of their number killed or wounded, at last surrendered. Company D lost eight men, killed, in this engagement, besides a number mortally wounded or permanently disabled. Of the former was Jasper Dodds, who was wounded in the knee by a rifle ball.

Worlington Dodds was already at the end of the wires, for, after dim guesses and vague conjecture, he had suddenly caught a clear view of this coming event which had cast so curious a shadow before it in this little Irish town. Political rumours, names, appearances, telegrams, seasoned horses at any price, there could only be one meaning to it. He held a secret, and he meant to use it. Mr.

Fountain to ask David to bring his violin next time. Lucy had shivered internally. "Now, of all the screeching, whining things that I dislike, a violin!" and thus thinking, gushed out, "Oh, pray do, Mr. Dodd," with a gentle warmth that settled the matter and imposed on all around. This evening, then, the Dodds came to tea.

DR. SHORT arrived, approved Dr. Phillips's treatment, and said the case was severe but not hopeless, and he would call again. A bed was prepared in the house for Mr. Hardie: but neither he nor any of the Dodds closed an eye that sorrowful night. About midnight, after a short slumber, the sufferer became uneasy, and begged to be left with Julia.

In reality it was essential to him that Jane should visit the Dodds.

"He could not come that evening. His brother had just arrived from India; they had not met for seven years. He could not set him to dine alone." After dinner, in the middle of her uncle's nap, in came Lucy, and, unheard-of occurrence deed of dreadful note woke him. She was radiant, and held a note from Eve. "Good news, uncle; those good, kind Dodds! they are coming to tea."

It is a shame to own a yacht and never use it. Mr. Have waited seven hours. They have closed the shutters. McCord. Watch the roof. Dodds. The most charitable thing would be to say nothing about the first day. We were baldly brutal that's the only word for it. And Mr. Harbison, with his beautiful courtesy the really sincere kind tried to patch up one quarrel after another and failed.

"What! under her own roof?" and he could not help rubbing his hands with glee and spite "under her own eye, and malgre her personal influence? Why, you are Nap. "She will be quite out of the way of the Dodds there," said Talboys, slyly. The senior groaned. And so they cut and dried it all. The last evening came, and with it, just before dinner, a line by special messenger from Mr. Talboys.
