Reference is made in the text to the utterances of the Tribune more because it was so prominent and influential than because it was very peculiar in its position. Wilson, Rise and Fall of Slave Power, iii. 63-69; N. and H. in. 255. See account of "the Pine Street meeting," New York, in Dix's Memoirs of Dix, i. 347.
She had caught sight of Ellen Dix standing under the deep portico, the scared face of the maid looking over her shoulder. Ellen's face crimsoned slowly. All at once she felt unaccountably sorry and ashamed. She wished she had not come. She felt that she wanted nothing so much as to hurry swiftly away. But Lydia Orr, still holding the strange old man by the arm, was already coming up the steps.
Brown, and later it was learned that Dix had once been on a western ranch and had helped the cowboys with their work. So with the cow disposed of, and the two dogs asleep on some old blankets under the automobile, the little party of travelers settled down for the night. They all slept soundly, and in the morning the first thing Bunny Brown and his Sister Sue wanted to know about was the cow.
Dix at my elbow, saying in a soft voice: "Now, my fine gentleman, is there any good reason why you should not ride to Bow Street with me?" "As there is a God in heaven. Mr. Dix," I answered, very low, "if you attempt to lay hands on me, you shall answer for it! And you shall hear from me yet, at the Star and Garter hotel."
Blackwell and Mrs. Griffing, the honors and the profits all were absorbed by men. Neither Dorothea Dix nor Clara Barton ever asked for a pension. All of these women at the close of the war appealed for the right of suffrage, a voice in the affairs of government; but such appeals were and still are treated with contemptuous denial.
So far as I could see, the remark did not compel any increase of respect from our fellow-diners. Upon more than one point I was worried. Often and often I reflected that some hitch might occur to prevent my getting money promptly from Mr. Dix.
As the children had been up early that morning, Mrs. Brown told them they must be early in bed, and after watching the fire until their eyes began to shut of themselves, Bunny and Sue started for their little bunks. Just as they were getting undressed, though it was scarcely dark, the barking of dogs was heard down the road. "That's Dix and Splash!" exclaimed Bunny.
The state machine of Van Buren was long known as the "Albany Regency." It included several very able politicians: William L. Marcy, who became United States Senator in 1831; Silas Wright, elected Senator in 1833; John A. Dix, who became Senator in 1845; Benjamin F. Butler, who was United States Attorney-General under President Van Buren, besides a score or more of prominent state officials.
Marmaduke had done me were the first to collect, since I was searching for the cause of my resentment against him. The incidents arrived haphazard as magic lanthorn views, but very vivid. His denial of me before Mr. Dix, and his treachery at Vauxhall, when he had sent me to be murdered.
Dix I can't at all allow this line of comment to be pursued Mr. Sullivan With all respect for your worship, and while I am ready to use any phrase most suitable for utterance here, I will not give up my right to state and proclaim the fact, however unpalatable, when it is notoriously true.
