This is especially so in the work called T'ung-chien kang-mu, which was the source of the history of the Chinese empire translated into French by de Mailla. Apart from Confucius's criticism of the inadequate capacity of the emperor of his day, there is discernible, though only in the form of cryptic hints, a fundamentally important progressive idea.
Now I don't think the club should furnish the poets with the raw material for their poems any more than, to go back to Confucius's shoemaker, it should supply leather for our cobblers." "What do you mean by raw material for poems?" asked Sir Walter, with a frown. "Pen, ink, and paper. What else?" said Demosthenes. "Doesn't it take brains to write a poem?" said Raleigh.
I never met the woman who could bring me to my knees, although I was married in the other world. What became of Mrs. C. I never inquired. She may be in China yet, for aught I know. I regard death as a divorce." "Your wife must be glad of it," said Raleigh, somewhat ungallantly; for, to tell the truth, he was nettled by Confucius's demeanor.
Confucius's importance lies in the fact that he systematized a body of ideas, not of his own creation, and communicated it to a circle of disciples. His teachings were later set down in writing and formed, right down to the twentieth century, the moral code of the upper classes of China.
He possessed a comprehensive knowledge of the religions of all nations, and described each with equal love and an endeavour to show us all their merits. I remember how warmly he praised Confucius's command not to love our fellow-men but to respect them, and how sensible and beautiful it seemed to me, too, in those days.
BURGE-LUBIN. Synthesis! This is an intellectual difficulty. This is a job for Confucius. Put me through to the Chief Secretary. CONFUCIUS'S VOICE. You are speaking to him. BURGE-LUBIN. An intellectual difficulty, old man. Something we don't understand. Come and help us out. THE ARCHBISHOP. May I ask how the question has arisen? BARNABAS. Ah! You begin to smell a rat, do you?
On the other hand, it is declared that he made the ancient books teach his own doctrine, and left out all that did not suit him; and, in confirmation of this view, the fact is pointed out that while these books as we have them teach pure Confucianism, another religion of a different spirit was growing up in China in Confucius's own day, which must have had some support in the old system.
Thus his career was a continuing pilgrimage from one noble to another, from one feudal lord to another, accompanied by a few young men, sons of scholars, who were partly his pupils and partly his servants. Many of these disciples seem to have been "illegitimate" sons of noblemen, i.e. sons of concubines, and Confucius's own family seems to have been of the same origin.
Alongside this collection there was another book that came to be regarded and used as a book of precedences. They contained "cases" and Confucius's decisions of them.
I am sure your good sense will tell you that this alters the case. Pray don't risk your precious, life on my account. Sorry for troubling you. Say I want to see him again, just for a moment. CONFUCIUS'S VOICE. Is the woman gone? BURGE-LUBIN. Yes, yes: it's all right. The Irish Air Service can drop me in the bay by parachute. I suppose it's quite safe, isnt it? CONFUCIUS. Nothing is quite safe.
