These exigences led to strenuous scenes in the Assembly, and the succession of Regents became still more rapid. In this capacity Andrada, Carvalho, Muniz, Feijo, and Lima, succeeded each other, while Ministers and Opposition squabbled and strove together, denouncing each other as the worst of tyrants. Notwithstanding the confusion, a certain amount of progress was effected.

A party of thirty-four accordingly landed, but as they were proceeding to the Rajah's palace, two of their number, Juan Carvalho and Sebastian del Cano, pilots, suspecting from certain signs that something was amiss, returned to the boats and pulled back to the ships.

Felix Duquesnal in one of his brilliant articles has written something about Delsarte, the singer, in connection with his controversy with Madame Carvalho. The cause of this controversy was the lessons she took from him. The name of Delsarte should never be forgotten, as I shall try to explain.

The Rajahs of Zebut and Mazagua pay tribute Magalhaens attacks the Rajah of Matan Sad death of the Admiral Treachery of the Rajah of Zebut Massacre of Spanish officers Don Juan Serrano cowardly deserted Ships sail away Reach Bohol The Conception burnt Touch at Mindanao and Cagayan Sooloo Hear of Borneo Sufferings from hunger Friendly reception at Puluan Provisions obtained Arrak first met with Cross to Borneo, and anchor off a large city The Rajah treats the Spaniards handsomely Wealth of the Rajah Customs of the people Carvalho deposed, and Espinosa chosen Captain, with Sebastian del Cano under him Reach Cimbuhon Ships careened Curious birds and insects The Moluccas reached Anchor at Tidor Spices obtained The Trinidad abandoned The Vittoria alone leaves the Moluccas Portuguese vessels robbed The Cape of Good Hope rounded Dreadful sufferings from hunger Many die Put into harbour of Santiago in the Cape de Verdes Portuguese discover where they have been Attempt to capture the ship Del Cano, now Captain, escapes The Vittoria arrives in the harbour of Saint Lucar, 6th of September, 1522 Del Cano rewarded with patent of nobility The Vittoria afterwards lost The name of Magalhaens or Magellan justly given to the Straits he discovered.

On learning the panic which had been created in Pernambuco, by the show of bombardment, and its anticipated repetition in earnest on my return, General Lima pushed forward towards the capital with no more formidable opposition than a few desultory skirmishes; and on the 11th of September, with the co-operation of the naval officers and seamen there left, took possession of the city, Carvalho retreating into the suburbs, where, breaking down the bridge which united them, he entrenched himself.

But this was accomplished at a price. Madame Carvalho told me about it herself. Her medium register was weak and Duprez undertook to substitute chest tones and develop clearness as much as possible. "When I began to work," she said, "my mother was frightened. One would have thought that a calf was being killed in the house."

People do not write in that way to a Carpentras urchin, offering a skit to the Beaumarchais theatre. It is that very play le Sexe faible that, last year, Carvalho was so enthusiastic about! Now no one wants it any more for Perrin thinks it unconventional to put on the boards of the Theatre Francais, a nurse and a cradle. Not knowing what to do with it, I have taken it to the Cluny Theatre.

Still anxious to avoid extremities from which, after the threats made, I could not consistently refrain I again wrote to Carvalho, that, had he possessed the means of distinguishing between the intentions of the Emperor, and the proceedings of a foreign faction, he would not have been in arms against His Imperial Majesty, by adherence to whom Brazil could alone be saved from that anarchy and confusion into which Mexico and other South American States had fallen through individual rivalry and the ignorance of their popular assemblies.

To these and all my previous communications no reply was returned either in the way of approval or otherwise. There was, however, one member of the administration, Luiz José Carvalho e Mello, who had ever been my friend, being himself a man of patriotic and enlightened views, but without the influence to counteract the designs of his Portuguese colleagues.

Carvalho declared that he would have the study of the work begun as soon as possible; it was a masterpiece; it would have a great success, but to assure this success, Madame Carvalho must sing the principal part. Now the principal part in Le Timbre d'Argent is that of a dancer and the singer's part is greatly subordinate. To remedy this they decided to develop the part.
