American humour has its own peculiar excellence, but it has nothing in particular to do with Bret Harte. American humour is purely exaggerative; Bret Harte's humour was sympathetic and analytical. In order fully to understand this, it is necessary to realise, genuinely and thoroughly, that there is such a thing as an international difference in humour.
A fair number of the men who were born in the thirties had won names Phillips Brooks; Bret Harte; Henry James; H. H. Richardson; John La Farge; and the list might be made fairly long if it were worth while; but from their school had sprung others, like Augustus St.
Tennessee's Partner, Bret Harte. Over the great door of an old, old church which stood in a quiet town of a far-away land there was carved in stone the figure of a large griffin. The old-time sculptor had done his work with great care, but the image he had made was not a pleasant one to look at.
"Be the battle lost or won, Though its smoke shall hide the sun, I shall find my love the one Born for me!" Bret Harte. Names of settlements in the '49 days were often as "Rough an Ready" as the reasons for their being! Most of them spoke, more or less eloquently, for themselves and no man picked by fame in glowing wise from the heterogeneous mass of persons could hope to escape a nickname.
Here is no Tolstoi painting the soul of his race in a few pages: Harte is simply a disciple of Poe and Dickens, turning the Poe construction trick gracefully, with Dickensy characters and consistently romantic action. The West has been rediscovered many a time since that decade which witnessed the first literary bonanza of Mark Twain and Bret Harte.
Mortimer and Bret were watched eagerly, but most faith was placed in Dick, not only for his greater weight, but for his superior and more plucky way of jumping. Springing from the very middle of the passage, his head back and his shoulder forward, he went like a thunderbolt against the door.
This Cape, or at least some part of it, is by the natives called Motugogogo, and it lies in latitude 35° 10' 30" S. longitude 185° 25' W. On the west side of it is a large and pretty deep bay, lying in S.W. by W. in which there appeared to be several small islands: The point that forms the N.W. entrance lies W. 1/4 N. at the distance of three or four leagues from Cape Bret, and I distinguished it by the name of Point Pococke.
Even the native novelist becomes a foreigner, with a foreigner's limitations, when he steps from the State whose life is familiar to him into a State whose life he has not lived. Bret Harte got his California and his Californians by unconscious absorption, and put both of them into his tales alive.
Opinion was forming throughout the country, aided by Bret Harte's famous lines: Which I wish to remark And my language is plain, That for ways that are dark And tricks that are vain, The heathen Chinee is peculiar Which the same I would rise to explain. Action by Congress was hindered by the Burlingame treaty of 1868 with China, which covered the subject of immigration in unmistakable language.
On Thursday the 7th of December, at noon, Cape Bret bore S.S.E. 1/2 E. distant ten miles, and our latitude, by observation, was 34° 59' S.; soon after we made several observations of the sun and moon, the result of which made our longitude 185° 36' W. The wind being against us, we had made but little way.
