Before they could decide how to proceed, the arriero came up, threw the noose of his lasso over the head of the magnificent bird, and secured it easily. He measured eight feet seven inches from tip to tip of the expanded wings. Will Osten was anxious to skin this bird, and carry it away with him as a trophy, but the guide protested.
Frank had had enough of practical anthropology, and left us, so there were but four to be provided. At eight o'clock the following morning, four decent horses and two pack animals were waiting at our door. A mounted arriero was in charge, to accompany us. Although he had been inefficient on the preceding journey, the same jail-bird was sent with us, as mozo, whom we had had before.
"Have you forgotten that we have been here for over a month? You would find nothing." As he grasped my thought his face went white and he was silent. So on the following morning we departed. Our host furnished us with food, clothing, mules, and an arriero, not to mention a sorrowful farewell and a hearty blessing.
They were, in fact, the hired peons of Carlos the cibolero the white man, and chief of the party. The half-blood Antonio by name was "arriero" of the mule-train, while the three Indians drove the ox-teams, guiding them across the ford with their long goads. Carlos himself was mounted upon his fine black horse, and, muffled in a strong serape, rode in front to pilot the way.
About a week after this time an atajo of pack-mules nearly fifty in number loaded with buffalo-hides and tasajo, was seen struggling up the eastern ceja of the Llano Estacado, and heading in a north-westerly direction over that desert plain. The arriero, mounted upon the mulera, was a half-blood Indian.
I can quite imagine, as Sir F. Head describes, the different expressions of those who have passed the gulf, and those who are passing. I never heard of any man being drowned, but with loaded mules it frequently happens. The arriero tells you to show your mule the best line, and then allow her to cross as she likes: the cargo-mule takes a bad line, and is often lost. April 4th.
Suddenly a recollection shot through my brain with remarkable clearness, and I turned to Le Mire: "Desiree, do you know the first time I ever saw you? It was in an electric brougham at the Gare du Nord. This is somewhat different, my lady." "And infinitely more interesting," she answered. "Are you ready? See that stupid arriero! Ah! After all, he knew what he was about. Then, messieurs allons!"
"When you see one, of course," said Harry sarcastically. "But who ever saw a horse with a neck like that?" As for me, I was really interested, and I turned to the arriero for information. "Si, senor," said Felipe, "Un caballo." "But who carved it?" Felipe shrugged his shoulders. "Is it new Spanish?" Another shrug. I became impatient. "Have you no tongue?" I demanded. "Speak!
The arriero informed her that it was difficult of access, but she turned the objection aside with contempt and commanded him to lead. Harry, of course, was with her, and I followed somewhat unwillingly; for, though Felipe's history was fairly accurate, I was inclined to regard his fable of the disappearing Incas as a wild tradition of the mountains.
I asked the master if we were still in the land of the Maragatos; but he told me that we had left it behind nearly a league, and that the lad was an orphan and was serving until he could rake up a sufficient capital to become an arriero. I addressed several questions to the boy, but the urchin looked sullenly in my face, and either answered by monosyllables or was doggedly silent.
