Once more the Annihilator had ceased to advance, and was falling through space. "Can you fix it?" anxiously asked Jack, who was panting from the terrible struggle. "Yes," replied Mr. Roumann. "Fortunately he did not smash a vital part. I will soon have it running again." In less than half an hour the motor was repaired, and was speeding the projectile on its way.
"You must remember, Jack, that the moon is moving at the same time we are. Had I headed the projectile for Luna, and kept it on that course, she would, by the time we reached her, been in another part of the firmament, and we would have overshot our mark. So, instead, I aimed the Annihilator at a spot in the heavens where I calculated the moon would be when we arrived there.
"Let him go now, and we'll go out and see what it is like on the moon." "I hope we find those diamonds," murmured Jack, and Mark smiled. In order not to admit the poisonous gases into the projectile, it was decided to leave the Annihilator and return to it by means of a double door, forming a sort of air lock. It was similar to the water lock used on the submarine.
That the projectile, on which their very lives depended in this dead world of the moon, should float away and leave them seemed incredible. Yet they had witnessed it. "Do do you really think we saw it saw the Annihilator, Mark?" asked Jack in a low voice, after several minutes had passed. "Saw it? Of course, we saw it. We've seen the last of it, I'm afraid. But what do you mean?"
Roumann. "I would have to describe the plates, in order to have the authorities identify them in the possession of the thief, and I do not care to do that. No; the best plan will be to hasten work or the Annihilator, and start for Mars before the thief can gain any advantage from the plates.
Not a window or a door had been forced, and the two machinists, who slept in the shop, declared they had heard no suspicious sounds during the night. It was a mysterious theft, and there seemed to be no means of solving it. At Mr. Roumann's suggestion they all increased their hours of work on the Annihilator.
"For the moon!" added Jack. And the Annihilator soared upward and onward, while those in her never dreamed of the fearful adventures that were to befall them ere they would again be headed toward the earth.
It has suppressed the human voice, subdued the human spirit, chained the human body. As a mass its aim has always been to make life uniform, gray, and monotonous as the desert. As a mass it will always be the annihilator of individuality, of free initiative, of originality.
As the Annihilator has been fully described in the volume entitled, "Through Space to Mars," there is no need to dwell at any length on the construction of the projectile in which our friends hoped to travel to the moon.
