On the surface this League of Nations having the word 'peace' in big letters emblazoned both upon its forehead and the seat of its trousers or, should I say, woven into the hem of its petticoat? seems an appeal for votes. I do not believe it will bear discussion. In a way, it tickles the ear without convincing the sense.
It always tickles Jimmy to see people run away from him, especially people so much bigger than himself; they look so silly. "I should think that they would have learned by this time that if they don't bother me, I won't bother them," he muttered, as he rolled over a stone to look for fat beetles. "Somehow, folks never seem to understand me."
When she pulled her feet back into the boat she found them covered with dimples. She did n't know what to make of these phenomena until the Dream-Fairies explained to her that a dimple always remains where a moonbeam tickles a little child. A dimple on the foot is a sure sign that one has been trailing in that beautiful silver river that leads to the Moon. By and by they got to the Moon.
It tickles one to death reading it. So do his pamphlets sharpest things out. Some talk of Defoe as his rival; but, for my part, I never read anything that rivals Swift's writings! Pity he has such a sharp edge to his temper. They say he will never get promotion."
Sol admitted that all things were indeed possible, although he had his doubts about the probability of a great many he could name. But he was wise enough to know that one must agree with a man if one desires to get into his warm favor, and it was his purpose on that ride to milk Judge Little of whatever information tickling his vanity, as an ant tickles an aphis, would cause him to yield.
"No! this is a fashion of the Czar's, which the Admiral thinks it good policy to follow. See, it tickles the hebete Russians. They are quite merry on it." "To be sure," said I; "practical jokes are the only witticisms savages understand."
There was not the touch of nature in it which makes humble people feel, and tickles even the very highest with desire to enter into it. So Faith declared that it must be very clever, and no doubt very beautiful, but she herself was so stupid that she could not make out very clearly what it was all about. "Well, I understand every word of it," Miss Dolly cried, with a literary look.
"I guess it isn't anything very much. Freddie always laughs in that squealing way when something tickles him." Mr. Bobbsey, with the two older twins, entered the kitchen soon after Mrs. Bobbsey. There stood Flossie and Freddie before a low kitchen table, one leaf of which was down, so that whatever was under could not be seen very well, on account of the shadow cast by the electric light.
His eye was fixed somberly on the city stretching away into the haze of the autumn day. "You blame me for letting this thing run!" he went on. "Of course it tickles me to death to see Eldridge flounder; but that isn't all. This is the best thing that could happen to them out there! I'm just patriotic enough to wish them more of it. It's good medicine!
And Solomon himself is no more than man; the truth-compelling ring extorts the confession that an itch of vanity still tickles and teazes him; the Queen of Sheba, seeker for wisdom and patroness of culture, after all likes wisdom best when its exponents are young men tall and proper, and prefers to the solution of the riddles of life by elderly monarchs one small kiss from a fool.
