We passed on and mounted our stairs. Something interesting in our conversation made me stop for a little while at Hewitt's office door on my way up, and, while I stood there, the Irishman we had seen in the street mounted the stairs. He was a poorly dressed but sturdy-looking fellow, apparently a laborer, in a badly-worn best suit of clothes.
Harry Carson came on, lightly bounding over the dirty places with almost a lad's buoyancy. To his surprise the dark, sturdy-looking artisan stopped him by saying respectfully "May I speak a word wi' you, sir?" "Certainly, my good man," looking his astonishment; then finding that the promised speech did not come very quickly, he added, "But make haste, for I'm in a hurry."
This explanation was a square-built, sturdy-looking man of some forty years. His appearance was the reverse of engaging, but by no means lacking in intelligence. He was ill-satisfied and annoyed with the universe, and habitually defied it from the stronghold of a double bed.
His hair was long, straight, and black, besides being uncommonly glossy an effect attributable to the prevalence of whale-oil in these regions. On the forehead the locks were cut short, so as to afford free scope to his black eyes and sturdy-looking nose.
Feeling refreshed by the short rest I was just remounting when a rough, sturdy-looking fellow came along, riding a powerful horse. "Good-day, messieurs," he said, glancing at us, I thought, very keenly; "am I on the right track for Nevers?" "Yes," I answered rather curtly. "Perhaps monsieur is himself going there? I am a stranger in these parts."
Other steeds on our hillsides have in modern times been so cut and altered in shape that their nearest relations would not know them. Thus the White Horse at Westbury, in Wiltshire, is now a sturdy-looking little cob, quite up to date and altogether modern, very different from the old shape of the animal. The vanishing of prehistoric monuments is due to various causes.
An erect, sturdy-looking man with white hair and mustache, and who wore the single star of a subaltern on his sleeve, came up, saluted, delivered a message, and then asked: "Are there any more orders, sir?" "No," was the reply. He brought his heels together with a click, saluted again, and went away.
Then he watched all the company sit or lie down on the shady side of the hedge, under the pollard-willows, and Tom Boldre the shuffler and one or two more go into the farm-house, and come out with great yellow-ware with pies in them, and the little sturdy-looking kegs of beer, and two mugs to go round among them all.
Before a sturdy-looking man dressed in working-clothes Cooper stopped for a moment and said, "Mr. C. W. Post and Mr. James Farley assure me that this is the rarest item in my collection." "Who is he?" I asked. "It is a union labourer who is worthy of his hire," Cooper said. I am convinced that the easiest business in the world must be the writing of epigrams on Woman.
Hey, good morning, peasant!” A sturdy-looking peasant, with a round, simple face and grizzled beard, who was walking by, raised his head and looked at the boy. He seemed not quite sober. “Good morning, if you are not laughing at me,” he said deliberately in reply. “And if I am?” laughed Kolya. “Well, a joke’s a joke. Laugh away. I don’t mind. There’s no harm in a joke.”
