Ten seconds later, every man on the galleon's decks, from George downward, was shouting the fine old song at the top of his voice, the melody going far out over the water and causing the haughty Dons on the galley's poop to stare in amazement. Almost at the same instant the galley's culverin spoke again.
The powers that emanate from the glittering wonder are as terrible as they are unnatural. The magic spell exerted by the beaker has transformed the heroic son of Herakles, the more than mortal, into the whimpering coward, the crushed, broken nonentity I found upon the galley's deck. You are silent? Your nimble tongue finds no reply.
"We shall have no difficulty in tackling those two fellows," he thought. The Frenchmen were berthed on the starboard side of the forecastle, the Ouzel Galley's people on the larboard side; Gerald was thus easily able to find his friends. He had previously made all the arrangements with Dan and Pompey they had communicated them to the rest of the crew, who only waited his arrival to carry them out.
"It was a dud, Lund!" he shouted. "Or else they didn't want to blow us up on account of the gold. But they've wrecked the cabin. The fog's coming in through the hole they made. Tamada's galley's gone. It's raked the schooner!" "So long's it's above the water line, to hell with it! We'll make out. Listen to the fools. They've gone in after us, straight on."
The rest of the crew took good aim, and then running in their guns, reloaded them. "Here she comes!" cried the mate. "She will be aboard us presently." As he spoke the stranger ranged up alongside, her decks covered with men. Four of the Ouzel Galley's guns alone went off, and ere they could be again loaded the stranger was alongside, throwing grappling-irons on board to secure her prey.
It makes you think of your comfortable little home, watching them big grey-backs running by your ship, and no hot grub because the galley's flooded. The Wolf was only two days behind us, and we had all the way to go. It was lively, guv'nor. The third night I was in with the cook helping him to get something for the men. They'd been roping her hatches.
Five breathless minutes followed for the fugitives, and then a whole forest of oars suddenly sprang from the galley's sides, plunged into the water, and she was under way, heading straight after the boat. "Shall we do it, Dick, think you?" demanded Stukely, as he peered anxiously under the foot of the sail. "Yes," answered Dick, "if the wind holds.
"'Cos I'm light," retorted the Doctor. "'Cos I'm a damn fool," he added with a sudden access of bitterness. "Look here, Tweedledee, what about this bloomin' boat? Here I've been standing for the last five minutes ah, there she is." He gazed distastefully at the lower boom, where two members of the galley's crew were casting off the painter that secured the boat to the Jacob's ladder.
He was standing by a battered hole in the galley's starboard side and looking down at the floor. A sunbeam fell through the hole and slanted along the planks of the flooring. His eyes were following this sunbeam, and his face was like a ghost's. "Jemmy; come and look here's a whole benchful accounted for at one swoop." Still Jemmy did not reply.
Heedless of sighs and half-heard groans alike, Lil Artha just sat there and took his ease, while the slave worked and worked as though he were chained to the galley's oar. No one ever knew whether it were actually an accident or a deep-laid scheme on the part of the weary Landy to end this period of torture.
