It was in the hope of finding out something of their history that I had left them; on that I had received a little light: I must have more; I must learn how to protect them! Hearing at length a little stir in the place, I walked through the next gate, and thence along a narrow street of tall houses to a little square, where I sat down on the base of a pillar with a hideous bat-like creature atop.
He summoned all his forces, gathering, in a mighty mental effort, all that depended on his speed, and took the path with a leap. The dazed king and his ministers saw him with whom they had that moment talked stretch a vast and ever-widening breach between them with a bat-like swoop, and while they watched he was swallowed up in distance. The bed of the torrent served him for the first few miles.
Its skinny, bat-like wings and its tail were of a dull gray. It was strange to see how so many gorgeous colours, so many curving lines, and such beautiful things as wings and hair and scales, combined to form the horrible creature, intense in ugliness. The knight was passing me with a salutation; but, as I walked towards him, he reined up, and I stood by his stirrup.
Among the insane dreamers of the earth, those are found who deem themselves enjoying light sufficient to live lives of perfection, even in this dim morning twilight that lies around us on earth; but it is their bat-like vision which takes for noonday that which, were their eyes couched, would seem to them but darkness visible.
This hideous beast breathed fire and smoke from its horrid nostrils as it flew, and it flapped its fearful way downwards to scorch and destroy the figure recumbent by the stream. Just when it was stooping upon its unconscious victim, a heavy scale, beaten from its side by the bat-like wings, fell upon the night-mare stricken sleeper's breast, and she awoke.
In a moment, bat-like and huge against the great yellow disk, appeared a marsh-owl. He was coming to look at me. What was I that dared remain abroad in the marsh after the rising of the moon? that dared invade this eery realm, this night-spread, tide-crept, half-sealand where he was king? How like a goblin he seemed!
Scarcely had this mood passed before a sensation came upon me of being fanned as if by clammy bat-like wings; and then the idea seized me that the crypt scintillated with the eyes of a malignant foe.
His bat-like ears had infused nothing of the vampire into his character. No the very type of jollity and fun was the broad black face of "Scipio Besancon," for such was the cognomen of my visitor. Scipio opened the dialogue: "Gollies, young mass'r! Ole Zip 'joiced to see um well 'gain daat he be." "Scipio is it?" "Ye', mass'r daat same ole nigger. Doctor told um to nuss de white genl'um.
But that thin and bat-like note silenced him. He ended lamely, with some empty generalisation on success. "Ah, but success in what?" Marsden demanded, interrupting his playing on the glass for a moment. "In your aim, whatever it may be." "Ah!" said Marsden, resuming his performance.
I never saw human nature made so uninviting, and I could fancy the terror inspired by these awful figures, with their bat-like flaps, in the tender minds of the little children entrusted to their care. It was edifying to hear these holy women discourse upon the Paris Exhibition, which it is hardly necessary to say the clerical party throughout France was bound to consider a failure.
