No indictment ever carried its proofs more conspicuously on its face than this. E. Bosworth Smith's subsequent tribute to the relative superiority of the Christian faith was given in an address before the Fellows of Zion's College, February 21, 1888. I give his closing comparison entire; also his eloquent appeal for Christian Missions in Africa.

'I will beg you to remember, sir, that I equipped a corps of volunteers for the Transvaal. 'I dare say. But a corps of volunteers for Zion that is blasphemy, narrow tribalism. 'Zion's soil is holy; we want no volunteers there: we want saints and teachers. And what would your volunteers do in Zion? Fight the Sultan with his million soldiers? They couldn't even live in Palestine as men of peace.

His friend had gone into the jungle on a long excursion, and he was lonely, unoccupied, and wholesomely bored. He got up and strolled into the stuffy reading- room. There he found a game of dominoes, a mutilated picture-puzzle, some copies of Zion's Herald, and a pile of New York and London newspapers.

And notwithstanding all the malicious rage of deadly foes, ranging and keenly pursuing him, through open or more secret places, the reproach of tongues and cruel mockings he endured, by the divine blessing, on his painful labors, amidst his many hardships, the number of Zion's friends were greatly increased, by the incoming and joining of many to the fellowship of their settled societies, who resolutely chose rather to suffer affliction with the people of GOD than to enjoy the pleasures of sin, which are but for a season.

'For Zion's sake will I not hold my peace, and for Jerusalem's sake I will not rest, until the righteousness thereof go forth as brightness, and the salvation thereof as a lamp that burneth. Second. As the glory of the grace of God will, at this day, be wonderfully manifest in and over his city; so also at that day will be seen the glory of his power.

"Is not this the Promised Land still?" thought Hadassah; "though those who are as the Canaanites of old now hold it though unhallowed worship be offered on Mount Zion, and images be set up within the walls of Jerusalem. Faith looks backward on fulfilled prophecy with gratitude, on yet unfulfilled prophecy with hope. Zion's brightest days are to come.

Thou hadst need to walk warily! 'Zion's Plea against Prelacy, damnation! 'Speech of Mr. Hampden, death and hell! 'Eikonoklastes, may the foul fiend fly away with my soul!" And the Governor closed the cupboard door with a bang, and, with a very red and frowning face, went back to his seat, and there sank into a reverie, which lasted until the entrance of Mistress Betty and Mr.

He led the way upstairs to a front room looking down upon the porch roof and over toward Zion's Head, which Westover could see dimly outlined against the night sky, when he lifted the edge of the paper shade and peered out. The room was neat, with greater comfort in its appointments than he hoped for.

Here God alludes to the condition of the children of Israel in the wilderness of old, and implies they shall be in a wilderness again; and as then he gave them water, and delivered them from serpents, cockatrices, vipers, dragons, so he will do now, now to his people, his chosen. See here are Zion's waste places, Zion's wilderness, forest, or Lebanon.
