We passed the mouth of the river Tyne, south of which stands Dunbar. The next place of interest we came off was Fast Castle, of which two tall towers remain close to the cliffs, in former days the stronghold of the Homes. It is supposed to be the original of Wolfs Crag in The Bride of Lammermoor.
After he had recovered a little, Skeleton, by a desperate effort, succeeded in shaking off the Chourineur, and getting upon his feet. Panting, drunk with rage and hatred, he was frightful. His cadaverous face streamed with blood, his upper lip, drawn back like a mad wolfs, displayed his teeth closely set against each other.
"You go and your brother Felix and his fine wife with you, for the things what money can buy. You got such madness for money, sometimes like wolfs you all feel to me breathing on my back, you go and " "I tell you if if you don't stop that terrible talk I I'll faint, I will! Oh, why don't I die why why why?"
"If you'll not b'lieve what I told, den you go'n' see for you'se'f." "What is it?" "De track, seh." "What track? Wolves?" "If it was only wolfs!" "Confound you! can't you say what it is?" "Eet's de It ain't safe for told its name out loud, for dass de way it come if it's call by its name!" "Windego, eh?" said Tom, laughing. "I'll know its track jus' as quick 's I see it."
It was nearly midnight, and as black as a wolfs mouth, when Leland sculled up from the 'Swan' to spend his last night but one aboard the house-boat. 'Billy, old man, he cried, bursting in suddenly; 'look here! Ain't I in for it now? Read this! He handed to his friend a letter which Barndale read in silence. 'This is awkward, the latter said after a long, grave pause.
"Craven Saxon," said the prisoner, "tell him I am the raven that, fifteen years since, stooped on his tower of strength and the pledges he had left there I am the hunter that found out the wolfs den on the rock, and destroyed his offspring I am the leader of the band which surprised Ardenvohr yesterday was fifteen years, and gave his four children to the sword."
In the later age, in the Asiatic colonies and in Greece, the rhapsodists, competing for prizes at feasts, or reciting to a civic crowd, were limited in time and gave but snatches of poetry. It is in this later civic age that a poet without readers would have little motive for building Wolfs great ship of song, and scant chance of launching it to any profitable purpose.
Little Wolfs cheek grew pale, as from time to time she observed the rising flush on Edward's brow. He was exceedingly susceptible to the use of stimulants, and was rapidly thrown into a highly exhilarated condition, making him for a time brilliant, but finally entangling his talk in a labyrinth of meaningless and silly words.
All day long the Indiana, Tom de Wolfs island trading brig, had tried to make Tucopia Island, an isolated spot between Vanikoro and the New Hebrides, but the strong westerly current was too much for her with such a failing breeze; and Packenham, the skipper, had agreed with Denison, his supercargo, to let Tucopia "slide" till the brig was coming south again from the Marshalls.
"Did you not know that the great Duke Casimir is dead, and that the black flag flies for him, and must fly on the Wolfsberg till his successor be crowned." "And who is his successor?" said I. "Who but young Otho, the worst of the Wolfs litter. But perhaps you are his friend?"
