As Whopper turned towards it, the deer suddenly made for the boy. "Look out!" yelled Snap, but before Whopper could turn aside the deer was on him and had knocked him to the ground. Then the deer struck out with its hoofs, landing on Whopper's shoulder and cheek. It was a moment of extreme peril, for there could be no doubt but that the deer meant to kill the young hunter.

"What was that?" asked Whopper. "Somebody calling for help, Whopper. Listen!" "Help! help!" came faintly to their ears. "Don't leave me, please! Help!" "It's some person calling," said Shep. "But where is he?" Both boys gazed around in perplexity. Then the cry was repeated, and following the sound they made their way to some brushwood growing between several trees.

Once more they went on, the smoke growing so thick they had to crouch down to get their breath. The tears were streaming from their eyes, and Whopper let out a yell as a burning brand floated down on his neck, raising a blister. "Here is the boat, thank fortune!" said Snap, a minute later. How they tumbled into the craft they scarcely knew.

He pulled gently at first and then gave a strong yank. Down came the game from the crotch of the tree, and Whopper almost lost his balance. To save himself he let the game drop to the ground and clutched at the tree branches nearest to him. "Dead as a door nail!" he announced, as soon as he felt safe. "And I knew it from the start. He didn't fall because he got caught, that's all."

The sun came out strongly, and in the clear sky thus presented the boys managed to get several pleasing photographs. One was of Tommy and his dog sitting on a rock, and this was so good that, when shown later, it was very much admired. They also took a photograph of Giant and Whopper with the strings of fish. Late that afternoon found them at the foot of the Windy Mountains.

The campfire had been started with a few dry twigs and cedar boughs and cast only a faint gleam around in the gathering darkness. "I didn't know snakes could be so active in the dark," observed the doctor's son. "We stepped right into their nest," answered Snap. "First Whopper went into it and then I followed. That is what made the snakes so mad and made them come right after us."

"Say, wish I had been along!" cried Snap. "I'd like to investigate that cabin and see who is there." "You wouldn't want to investigate a block of wood or a stone thrown at your head, would you?" demanded Whopper sarcastically. "Maybe we could go there when the hermit -or whatever he or she is -is asleep," went on Snap. He always believed in getting at the bottom of a mystery.

Now he leveled his shotgun and banged away. It was a close-range hit, and the head of the wildcat was almost blown from the body. It was several seconds before the three boy hunters realized that the battle was at an end. Slowly Whopper turned over and looked at the two dead animals. He rose to his feet, panting heavily. "Are they bo -both dead?" he asked. "As dead as nails," answered Snap.

"I guess we are all too lame to go ashore among those snakes," said Giant, with a short laugh. "But we have got to do something," he added, seriously. "I move we remain on the boat until morning," said Shep. "Even if we clear out some of the snakes now, we may not be able to get at all of them. And who wants to go to sleep with snakes around? Not I!" "I couldn't sleep if I tried," said Whopper.

"Didn't I tell you I was going to bring down sixteen deer, twenty bears, two hundred wild turkeys, a boatload of wolves, and " "Phew, Whopper! Every time you name 'em over the list gets longer!" cried Charley Dodge. "If you bring down so much game there won't be anything left for other hunters." "Well, I'll leave you a bear or two," said Whopper cheerfully. "Thanks awfully."
