We were already within hearing of the great roar of the Falls, not unlike the sound of an express train coming along the track a little distance of. Shortly after, we reached our terminus and its adjoining hotel, in which for a time I forgot the Falls and everything else in a sound sleep. The first thing that struck me on wakening was the loud continuous roar near at hand.
We started out together, climbing the trail in single file, but the enthusiasm of the chase soon led my companions into the deeper brush where the little doves lured them, and only the sharp crack of an occasional shot wakening the echoes of the cliffs disturbed my solitude.
Pools of sunlight were flecking the plains. In another quarter of an hour moving objects would be distinctly visible a mile away. With his precious burden in his arms, her lips so near that he could feel their breath, her heart throbbing, he became suddenly conscious of the incongruity of the bird-song that was wakening all about them.
"Edward," she exclaimed on wakening, "is it you?" "Who should it be?" I demanded all my suspicions renewed by her question. "I am so glad. I have had such a dream. Oh! Edward, I dreamed that you were killing me!" "Ha! what could have occasioned such a dream?" My demon suggested, at this moment, that her dream had been occasioned by a consciousness of what her guilty fancies deserved.
In May, the Viscount De Gand had forced his way to his bedside in the dead of night; and wakening him from his sleep, had assured him, with great solemnity, that his life was not worth a pin's purchase if he remained in Brussels. He was aware, he said, of a conspiracy by which both his liberty and his life were endangered, and assured him that in immediate flight lay his only safety.
Like an Aeolian harp, the slightest breath avails for wakening melody midst its strings. But years multiply cares. Age increases heaviness. Time destroys its own children. The poet says: "In youth we carry the world like Atlas; in maturity we stoop and bend beneath it; in age it crushes us to the ground."
Beautiful in elegant and dignified simplicity thoughtless of herself yet with a look of thought, and with an air of melancholy, which accorded exactly with his own feelings, and which he believed to arise from the same reflections that had passed in his own mind. "Miss Broadhurst, Colambre! all the Broadhursts!" said his mother, wakening him as she passed by to receive them as they entered.
The terror of this lesson remained longer than those who knew him would have expected; but it insensibly wore away. The efforts I made in the interval to conciliate and avoid wakening the fiend were strenuous, but ineffectual. I shrunk from no labour, and the business with which he intrusted me shewed the confidence he placed in my activity and intelligence.
Today, when the forces of education are steadily working nearer to the cradle, a new sense is wakening of the importance of the period of infancy, and its wiser treatment; yet those who know of such a movement are few, and of them some are content to earn easy praise and pay by belittling right progress to gratify the prejudices of the ignorant.
Here Rodney stopped the carriage and helped Katharine to alight. Henry, too, gave her his hand, and fancied that she pressed it very slightly in parting as if she sent him a message. But the carriage rolled on immediately, without wakening Mrs. Hilbery, and left the couple standing by the obelisk.
