Isn't that an alluring name Glen Affric? A little while ago I should have wanted immensely to see it; but now whenever any one proposes walking through a glen I always argue that it would be better not. Last night we stopped at Strathpeffer, a gay and beautiful little cure-town, which is like a walled flower-garden set down in the midst of wild and stern Caledonia.
Bobbie sat down abruptly; the girl stared at the carpet. "I don't see the point of your remark," said Bobbie at last, with mildness. "When last I had the honor of hearing of her, Lady Niton was taking the air or the waters at Strathpeffer." "As far as I know," remarked Sir James, "she is staying with the Feltons, five miles off, at this moment." Bobbie whistled. "Close quarters!"
"I'm sure the Verneys, and the Egertons, and the Duffs have always thought so." "But it isn't really," whimpered poor Fluff. "You fellows know that everybody talks of Eton and Harrow. Who ever heard of Harrow and Eton? People say I've heard my eldest brother, Strathpeffer, say it again and again 'Eton and Harrow, just as they say 'Gentlemen and Players." "Oh," said the Caterpillar.
The application of soda fomentations, turpentine cloths, or electric or hot-air baths may be useful. Improvement may result from the general and local therapeutics available at such places as Bath, Buxton, Harrogate, Strathpeffer, Wiesbaden, or Aix. In selected cases, a certain measure of success has followed operative interference, which consists in a modified excision.
She had spent, it seemed, two months in Great Britain seven weeks in touring from Stratford to Strathpeffer, and one as paying guest in an old English family near Ledbury, an impoverished, but still stately family, called Bagshawe.
The Etonian put all the strength and power he had suppressed so manfully into a tremendous swipe, and hit the ball clean over the ropes. "Do you want to double that bet?" said Strathpeffer to the Caterpillar. They were standing on the top of the Trent coach. "No, thanks." "Give you two to one, Egerton?" "Done in fivers." The unhappy bowler sent down another half-volley.
Up to now Miss Helen's own idea of heaven seems to have been Strathpeffer." "How very strange!" But Blanche Farrow was not thinking of Helen Brabazon's possible idea of heaven as she uttered the three words. Bubbles chuckled. "I touched the old gentleman up a bit yesterday, didn't I, Blanche?" This gave her aunt the opportunity for which she was seeking. "You did!
He was a small farmer in Strathpeffer, near Dingwall, and for many years of his life neither exhibited any talents, nor claimed any intelligence above his fellows. The manner in which he obtained the prophetic gift was told by himself in the following manner:
Wouldn't I do it, if I could? Strathpeffer. She'd soon forget her sciatica. I don't know what Mrs. Povey's annual income is, but I expect that if she took it into her head to live in the dearest hotel in England, there would be no reason why she shouldn't." Sophia lifted her head and smiled in calm amusement. "I expect so," she said superiorly. "A hotel that's the life. No worries.
At Achterneed, near Strathpeffer in Ross-shire, the Beltane bannocks were called tcharnican or hand-cakes, because they were kneaded entirely in the hand, and not on a board or table like common cakes; and after being baked they might not be placed anywhere but in the hands of the children who were to eat them.
