Occasionally, we would have a crocodile wanting us to get out of his pit instead. No matter how hard you hit him on his nose he would chase you around until he would finally give in, so to speak, and dash into the water with a big splash or sometimes, glide gracefully to where he could join his friends who sometimes numbered a thousand!
Yes I have heard "Man overboard!" a good many times since I was a boy, and once or twice I have seen the man go. There are more men lost in that way than passengers on ocean steamers ever learn of. I have stood looking over the rail on a dark night, when there was a step beside me, and something flew past my head like a big black bat and then there was a splash! Stokers often go like that.
"Not a sound not a shot, men," he ordered, as the quivering line reined up before him. "Follow our lead, stampede the ponies, and charge through the crowd; then rally quick as you can." Splash! drove the leaders into the shallows. Breast deep, foaming, they spurred through the stream, the troop plunging after, with carbines slung over their shoulders.
Absolutely the only lights that one saw was when he leaned over the railing and saw the splash of innumerable phosphorescent organisms breaking against the boat. I have seen the like of it only once before, and this was on the Pacific down at Asilomar one evening, when the waves were running fire with phosphorescence. It was a beautiful sight there and on the Atlantic too.
No sound, not a bird's note, nor the cry of animals, fell on the listening ear; save, occasionally, the loud roar and splash of the rocks as they were loosened from the mountains' sides, and rolled down into the water.
There was a short, fierce struggle, an oath, a gleam of light and then, with a screech of mortal pain and a wild clutch at the air, my companion fell backwards over the cliff. It was all the work of a moment a shriek, a splash, and then silence. How long the silence lasted I cannot tell. What happened next whether I cried or fainted, looked or shut my eyes is to me an absolute blank.
Wix had already glared back: "Ought to live together? Don't begin it AGAIN!" She turned away with a groan, to reach the washing-stand, and Maisie could by this time recognise with a certain ease that that way verily madness did lie. Mrs. Wix gave a great untidy splash, but the next instant had faced round. "She has taken a new line." "She was nice to you," Maisie concurred.
In that pause, just before the splash of alighting, from a thick cover of sedge across the pool came two sharp spurts of flame, one after the other, followed by two thunderous reports, so close together as to seem almost like one.
As the two regarded each other they could hear the faint splash of the fountain in the tank midway of the courtyard. Her father, a true Roman to his marrow, with all a Roman's arbitrary instincts, reverted to the direct attack. "You will marry Pulfennius Calvaster," he commanded. "I will not!" she declared. He temporized. "Why not?" he queried.
When we had finished separating the junk, there was nearly a foot of oil on deck in the waist, and uproarious was the laughter when some hapless individual, losing his balance, slid across the deck and sat down with a loud splash in the deepest part of the accumulation.
