When the imagination shrinks in fear from the phantoms which it creates, it may be excused because it is imagination. But when the intellect allows itself to be tyrannized over or terrified by the categories to which itself gives birth, it is in the wrong, for it is not allowed to intellect the critical power of man to be the dupe of anything.
The presence of the good does not console us for that of the evil, because it neither mitigates nor even shrinks from it; we merely lose our pleasure in the good nature and simplicity of Æneas Sylvius when we see his cool admiration for a man of fraud and violence like Sforza; we begin to mistrust the purity and integrity of the upright Guarino da Verona when we hear his lenient judgment of the infamous Beccadelli; we require of the virtuous that they should not only be incapable of vice, but abhorrent of it; and this is what even the best men of the Renaissance rarely were.

Some men fly from it as from a bear; and some are afraid to drink of it, for fear it should be poison unto them. Such supineness ensures the very evil from which it shrinks.
And with all his old affection for Langham, all his frank sense of pliancy in the Squire's hands, yet in this strait of life how he shrinks from them both! souls at war with life and man, without holiness, without perfume! Is it the law of things?
These roll superbly through enormous sheets of sand, unite and approach the mainland in one stately stream three miles in breadth. But then comes a sad falling off. The navigable fairway shoals and shrinks, middle grounds obstruct it, and shelving foreshores persistently deny it that easy access to the land that alone can create great seaboard cities.
"Are you sure my father saw you?" she asked presently. "As clearly as you do now, Dolly," I said. "But your clothes? He might have gone by you in such." "I pray that he did, Dorothy," I replied. But I was wholly convinced that Mr. Manners had recognized me. "And and what did he say?" she asked. For she had the rare courage that never shrinks from the truth.
But his utterance is that of one who has certain views for the first time placed before him, and shrinks from the consequences of their advocacy shrinks from "the violence implied" in them although for some reason he dares not refuse to place those views before the people.
