Monsieur Laurentie was listening eagerly, and watching Dr. Senior's lips, as if he could catch the meaning of his words by sight, if not by hearing. "But where am I to go?" I asked. "I have no money, and cannot get any until I have written to Melbourne, and have an answer. I have no means of proving who I am." "Leave all that to us, my dear girl," answered Dr. Senior, cordially.
There is another point in regard to the secret of Senior's power of recording conversations which is worth noting by modern psychologists. I cannot help thinking that what Senior did, unconsciously of course, was to trust to his subconsciousness. That amiable and highly impressionable, if dumb, spirit which sits within us all, got busy when Thiers or Guizot was talking.
The next spring all four did indeed go up to the woods, but it was after a severe attack of typhoid fever on Billy Senior's part, and Susan was almost too much exhausted in every way to trust herself to the rough life of the cabin.
"The window was open at the great house, Bashwood; and your ears, I presume, were not absolutely shut." Still impenetrable to the sting, Mr. Bashwood persisted more obstinately than ever. "Unless I am greatly mistaken," he said, "your long experience in such things has even suggested to you, sir, that Miss Gwilt might turn out to be known to the police?" Pedgift Senior's patience gave way.
For Ricardo's opinion of Torrens, see Letters to Trower, p. 39. Political Economy , p. 21. External Corn-trade, pp. xviii, 109, 139; Production of Wealth, p. 375. Originally in the Encyclopædia Metropolitana, 1836. Senior's Political Economy , p. 26. Ibid. , pp. 55, 129-131. Senior's Political Economy , p. 125. Ibid. p. 135.
But no modern treatise on political science, whether dealing with institutions or finance, now begins with anything corresponding to the opening words of Bentham's Principles of Morals and Legislation 'Nature has placed mankind under the governance of two sovereign masters, pain and pleasure'; or to the 'first general proposition' of Nassau Senior's Political Economy, 'Every man desires to obtain additional wealth with as little sacrifice as possible. In most cases one cannot even discover whether the writer is conscious of possessing any conception of human nature at all.
"No Freshman shall wear his hat in the College yard, unless it rains, hails, or snows, provided he be on foot and have not both hands full." "Freshmen are to consider all the other classes as their Seniors." "No Freshman shall speak to a Senior with his hat on; or have it on in a Senior's chamber, or in his own if a Senior be there."
When some of his friends were pouring cold water on this Senior's bruised head a few minutes later, he poured cold water on their scheme to attempt to carry out what he had failed in, for he said: "Don't you ever go up against that Lakerim fellow; his cane works like a Gatling gun."
He was then almost the only grandchild; and the old man was very proud of his manner and appearance, and particularly amused at certain gigantic efforts on The Boy's part to adapt his own short legs to the strides of his senior's long ones.
The exiled rioters, after a long and disheartening search, found rest for the soles of their feet in Tom Senior's study, which, though not nearly so convenient, afforded them asylum during their pugilistic encounters. The studious ones settled down once more to their work, and the near approach of the examinations presently absorbed all their attention.
