There is a process of socialization and self-discovery for which the best home-circle cannot provide; and the club only recognizes and uses this "gang" instinct. It capitalizes for good the normal social desires of the boy.

"The trail up the mountain of Self-discovery is not an easy one. What we call Fact historical or natural is essentially such an expression, on the one hand a finished expression, set in the past and therefore for ever beyond the possibility of change and so of progress, an exhausted or dead expression, on the other hand a passing into the light of what was before unknown even to the expresser's self, an act by which was made and secured a self-discovery or self-revelation, a creative act of self-knowledge and so significant and interpretable.

And only when they had seen and submitted to that humiliating self-discovery would their true acquaintance with Christ and their true search after Him begin.

The great days of history have been the eras of great candid truth-facing, self-discipline. Self-discipline and self-discovery go together. There is a greater return on the investment in being born again, in getting what one wants, than in anything else in the world. If one sees through himself, he can see through anybody.

And then, as always with Behmen, all this observation of men, all this discovery and self-discovery, ran up into philosophy, into theology, into personal and evangelical religion.
