The origin of the Jewish feast and fast of Purim is still obscure. This cannot be an accident. The case for Vashti is not clearly made out by Jensen, but, for all that, it is certain that the Babylonian elements in the institution have been combined with some bits of Persian mythology. The historical setting is the work of the Jewish compiler of the tale, that has of course some historical basis.

I have answered already, that their fasting and praying are not to be referred to the days of Purim, which were memorials of their delivery, but to the time past, when, by the means of fasting and prayer, they did impetrate their delivery, before ever the days of Purim were heard of, and as touching alms, it can make no holiday, because much alms may be, and hath been given upon days of civil joy and solemnity.

Our school-boys were celebrating the downfall of Haman, and they were doing it in the same war-like fashion in which American boys celebrate their forefathers' defiance of George III. The synagogues roared with the booming of fire-crackers, the report of toy pistols, the whir-whir of Purim rattles.

The Rebbitzin's broom was heard banging viciously in the passage. Hannah bent down and kissed the ample forehead beneath the black skull-cap. "Mr. Levine also writes insisting that I must go to the Purim ball with him and Leah," she said, glancing at the letter. "A husband's wishes must be obeyed," answered the Reb. "No, I will treat him as if he were really my husband," retorted Hannah.

"The Purim Ball at the Club. As you've got to come back to give Hannah Gett, you might as well come in time to take me to the ball." "Right you are," said Sam cheerfully. Leah clapped her hands. "Oh that will be jolly," she said. "And we'll take Hannah with us," she added as an afterthought. "Is that by way of compensation for losing my husband?" Hannah asked with a smile.

"To a Jew," she hastened to assure him, "But he is neither a Talmud-sage nor pious. He is newly returned from the Cape." "Ah, they are a link lot," muttered the Reb anxiously. "Where didst thou first meet him?" "At the Club," she answered. "At the Purim Ball the night before Sam Levine came round here to be divorced from me." He wrinkled his great brow. "Thy mother would have thee go," he said.

Leah gave a happy laugh, and turned the new ring on her finger in delighted contemplation. "All's well that ends well," said Sam. "Through this joke Leah will be the belle of the Purim Ball. I think I deserve another piece of plaice, Leah, for that compliment. As for you, Mr. Maggid, you're a saint and a Talmud sage!" The Maggid's face was brightened by a smile.

"Then we had Purim Schpielers, who visited every house, dressed up very funnily and full of jokes; some acted, and some were disguised. In fact, it was the happiest Purim I have ever spent, and I doubt if there is any other place where it could be spent so happily.

"I was so attracted by them, and so was everyone who saw them, that we followed them at a respectful distance. Sometimes someone had had a little too much wine when visiting and it had gone to his head. Then some of the party would say: 'Ah well, it is Purim there is no shame.
