Thus did in the days of persecution the faithful profess their belief in Christ, and seal their profession with their blood, as the acts of the martyrs record. When the holy Bishop Polycarp was brought before the heathen judge, who said to him, "Deny Christ and you will be free!" Polycarp's reply was worthy of a true Christian.

He was not surely such a dotard that he required to be told how to dispose of these Epistles. If we are to be guided by the statements in the Ignatian Epistles, we must infer that the letters to be sent to Antioch were to be forwarded with the utmost expedition. There are no such signs of haste or urgency indicated in the postscript to Polycarp's Epistle.

He sat down in the kitchen to wait, and while he waited he chewed tobacco incessantly, and ruminated upon the mystery which lay behind the few words Val had first spoken, before she realized just what it was she was saying. After a long, long while so long that even Polycarp's patience was feeling the strain Val opened the door and stood leaning weakly against the casing.

Some friendly hand might convey it from thence to its destination. Psyria and Syria are words so akin in sound that a transcriber of Polycarp's letter, copying from dictation, might readily mistake the one for the other; and thus an error creeping into an early manuscript may have led to all this perplexity.

It was a highly delicate situation. 'Your life is, at any rate, saved, said Hugo at length. 'You think it was in danger? Polycarp's lip curled. 'I think so. 'Possibly you foresaw the danger I ran, Polycarp remarked with frigid irony, 'and came into the flat with the intention of protecting me. May I ask how you came in? 'I came in through the drawing-room window, said Hugo.

We took little donkeys and started. We saw Polycarp's tomb, and then hurried on. The "Seven Churches" thus they abbreviate it came next on the list.

Compare Hilgenfeld, Einleitung, p. 72, where reference is made to an essay by Lipsius, Der Märtyrertod Polycarp's in Z. f. w. T. 1874, ii. p. 180 f. Haer. iii. 3, 4. S. R. i. p. 278. K. pp. 593, 599. Westcott, On the Canon, p. 88, n. 4. Tryph. 103. S.R. i. p. 294. S.R. i. The section appears in none of the forms reproduced by Dr. Recept.

'So you're determined, Louis, said Hugo lightly, 'to bring me to my knees about the transfer of my business to a limited company, eh? 'What on earth do you mean, man? asked Ravengar, whose voice was always gruff. 'I refer to Polycarp's visit yesterday. 'I know nothing of it, said Ravengar slowly, looking across the wilderness of roofs. 'Then why are you here, Louis?

In one short letter of Polycarp's, there are near forty clear allusions to books of the New Testament: which is strong evidence of the respect which Christians of that age hear for these books, and positive evidence that the gospel had been written before this epistle.

In a low voice she thanked me, hurriedly, for having dropped that dreadful suit. And were we she hesitated were we going to be regular communicants? I didn't want to go to St. Polycarp's any more, and it was on the tip of my tongue to give a politely evasive reply, when our eyes met and held each other.
