The bow-window was filled with plants, and orange trees and other shrubs were arranged in large pots along the side of the room. The wall at one end was made of rock-work, and in the crevices were planted vines, ferns and mosses. Tiny jets of water near the ceiling kept the top moist, and dripped and trickled down over the rocks and plants till they reached the pebbly basin below.

The birds flew hither and thither on joyous wings, twittering their simple gratitude to Him who 'heareth the ravens cry; for they indeed were thankful that the dark days were past, and that 'the time of the singing of birds had come. As to the little brooks and streams, how rejoiced were they to be free once more! they bounded away over the sandy shallows or pebbly beds, laughing for very gladness, and kissing the green banks whose fresh verdure they laved, whilst murmuring to them their gladsome song: 'I'm free! oh, joy!

This he got tired of wearing, so he kept it in a compass-box, which was empty. At the end of the four days we turned in at a deep bay and came to anchor. The country was the usual proposition very light-brown, brittle-looking mountains, about two thousand feet high; lots of sage and cactus, a pebbly beach, and not a sign of anything fresh and green.

The cement makes the most lasting bond in a mixture of this kind; moreover, the pebbly finish was effective and darker for the insets. The walk was less than two feet wide and roughly squared by pieces of shingle laid in the concrete, tip to tip. The final dressing, two inches of pebble mortar, looked unpromising on account of its coating of white.

And so you see that it is very important for you to get good habits as boys and girls, for first you make the habits, and then the habits make you. You have often seen a little brook running along between its banks and over its pebbly bed. Well, once there was no brook-bed there, but gradually, years ago, a little stream began to trickle through, and finally it wore out a bed for itself.

These forest brooks, with their clear, cold waters brawling over their sandy or pebbly beds through wild tropical glens, always had a great charm for me. The beauty of the moist, cool, and luxuriant glades was heightened by the contrast they afforded to the sterile country around them. The bare or scantily wooded hills which surround the valley are parched by the rays of the vertical sun.

She looked and uttered a cry, beckoning to Rivardi. "Come! Come!" He hurried to her side, Gaspard following. The pool on which her eyes were fixed was shallow enough to show the pebbly bed beneath the water and there lay apparently two corpses one of a man, the other of a woman whose body was half flung across that of the man. Morgana pointed to them.

This is not a song that spurts and gushes up fountain-like in the manner of the robin's, and of some other kinds, sprinkling the listener, so to speak, with a sparkling vocal spray; but it keeps low down, a song that flows along the surface gurgling and prattling like musical running water, in its shallow pebbly channel.

No women with babies were allowed to go, nor any children. I came last with old Bootha. The procession moved along an old winding track on the top of a moorilla, or pebbly ridge, pine-trees overarching in places carving the sky into a dome a natural temple through which we walked to the burial-ground.

Any one who will expose his body to this blow of the surf will recognise how violent it is; he may, if the beach be pebbly, note how it drives the stones about; fragments the size of a man's head may be hurled by the stroke to the distance of twenty feet or more; those as large as the fist may be thrown clear beyond the limits of the wave.
