With a discourse on the Northwest passage. Done into English by Richarde Eden. Newly set in order, augmented and finished by Richarde Willes. London, 1577. Richarde Jugge. De Orbe Novo or the Historie of the West Indies, etc., comprised in eight decades.
Unfortunately, no one could say what a common league was, beyond the vague definition of 'an hour's walk; so two men were started from the shore of the lake, the one a Burgundian and the other a Swiss, with directions to walk for an hour down the Orbe towards Chenit, the stone to be placed half-way between the points they should respectively reach at the end of the hour.
What truth there may be in Roger of Hovenden's statement concerning his motives cannot be said; "Hic ad augmentum et famam sui nominis emendicata carmina et rhythmos adulatorios comparabat et de regno Francorum cantores et joculatores muneribus allexerat ut de illo canerent in plateis, et jam dicebatur ubique, quod non erat talis in orbe."
Hic ille est Grotius, majus quo doctior orbis Nil habuit; credo, nil habiturus erit: Gallia quem stupuit, stupuit quem Suecia, verus Qui Phoebus Delphis, orbe pharusque fuit. Salmasius, who so unmercifully fell foul of Grotius's memory, had formerly been one of his greatest admirers.
No sooner have I got into my room penitus ab orbe divisus, as I rashly think than there is a tap at the door. Trevanion's, a pretence to have me near her, and see with her own eyes that I am not fretting; the moment she hears I have shut myself up in my room, she is sure that it is for sorrow.
Thus man is there like a little god in his own world or Microcosm, which he governs after his own fashion: he sometimes performs wonders therein, and his art often imitates nature. Jupiter in parvo cum cerneret aethera vitro, Risit et ad Superos talia dicta dedit: Huccine mortalis progressa potentia, Divi? Jam meus in fragili luditur orbe labor.
You see I am as good as my word. . .Write soon; in a few days I go to Vienna for some months. . . ORBE, April 7, 1830. I cannot thank you enough, my dear Louis, for the happiness you have given me in completing your medical examinations, and thus securing to yourself a career as safe as it is honorable. It is a laurel added to those you have already won; in my eyes the most precious of all.
But its connexion by que with immensus ultra, shows that it refers to position, and means lying opposite, i.e., belonging, as it were, to another hemisphere or world from ours; for so the Romans regarded the Northern Ocean and Britain itself, cf. A 12: ultra nostri orbis mensuram; G. 17: exterior oceanus. So Cic. This interpretation is confirmed by ab orbe nostra in the antithesis.
The islanders might well be dismayed at the prospect of a seclusion which promised to recall the Virgilian line: "penitus toto divisos orbe Britannos."
The little town of Orbe, is nearly surrounded by a river of the same name; it bears evident marks of antiquity, and from its position, must have been in former times a place of considerable strength. The ancient kings of Burgundy had a residence here. This part of the country is highly varied, and presents a most picturesque appearance.
