She could remember no good of her father. It was his habit to wear the Irish manner of distraction, as he walked the streets with his chin projected and his eyes focussed in the middle distance to make them look wild, but his soul was an alert workman who sat tightening screws. By neat workmanship he could lift from negligences any reproach of negativeness and turn them into positive wounds.

Talk to most young men in college or school, and you will find this feeling, like a pathetic minor chord, running through their highest and most daring boasts. Is not our college training responsible for some of this melancholy negativeness of life?

Of this sort, I think, we must imagine the Countess of Albany, if we would understand the anomalies of her life: a person rather deficient in sensitiveness; indifferent, light-hearted, in her girlhood; not rebelling against the frightful negativeness of existence, the want of love, of youth, of brightness, of all that a young girl can want in the early part of her married life; not rebelling against the positive miseries, the constant presence of everything that was mentally and physically loathsome in the second period of this wedded slavery; a woman of cold temperament, and even, you might say, of cold heart, and safe, safe in the routine of duty and suffering, until a merely intellectual flame burst out, white and cold, in her hitherto callous nature.

It is possible to reply to an unjust accusation. But what is to be done against the negativeness of such polite indifference? He raged against it. He thought that he would never see Minna again, and he could not bear it. He felt how little all the pride in the world weighs against a little love. He forgot his dignity; he became cowardly; he wrote more letters, in which he implored forgiveness.

Plunker was a powerful man, and when his anger was roused they knew by experience it was not safe to interject a word either of denial or assent; so they determined, when he called them to him, to pursue a policy of negativeness, and trust to Providence to deliver them from a position that was showing signs of serious consequences.

Nor, for that matter, was there in him a particle of anything at all, whether good or bad: which complete negativeness of character produced rather a strange effect. In the same way, his wizened, marble-like features reminded one of nothing in particular, so primly proportioned were they.

The distinctive character of Life, therefore, is that it is Positive and not Negative; and every degree of negativeness, that is, every limitation, is ultimately traceable to deficiency of Life-power. Limitations surround us because we believe in our inability to do what we desire.

Absent treatments is the power to connect with and direct the Cosmic atmospheric currents which make for positive expression of health, and when we have laid hold of this power, we can change at will any vibration of negativeness with which we find ourself or others expressing, and we do it through the power of thought, feeling and revelation.

"I am sorry," he said. "I must have made a mistake. I will hurry back." There were more questions which he was longing to ask, but the cold negativeness of her manner chilled him. She sat with her fingers poised over the keys, waiting for his departure. He turned and left the room. Mr. Fentolin, his carriage drawn up close to the beach, was painting steadily when Hamel stood once more by his side.

But, while every single player differed markedly from every other, there was a certain uniform negativeness of expression which had the effect of a mask as if they had all eaten of some root that for the time compelled the brains of each to the same narrow monotony of action.
